Chapter 3 - The Fragile Alliance

The morning of the reunion dawned with a heavy mist that blanketed the Boston hills

shrouding the mansion in a gray, ghostly veil

Victoria was frantic

running from room to room with a checklist in her hand

ordering the catering staff around like a drill sergeant

She looked stressed

her skin pulled tight over her cheekbones

but she still maintained that terrifying aura of control

Leo watched her from the stairwell

his heartbeat steady and calm

Today was the day

the day the truth would finally be unleashed

He saw Mr. Henderson arrive early

his face etched with a familiar look of professional anxiety

He caught Leo’s eye for a brief moment

a silent acknowledgement of the bond they shared

Leo felt a flicker of hope

a feeling he had almost forgotten

He went to his room to gather the files

the encrypted drive safely tucked into his sock

He had spent the last two weeks refining the recordings

cleaning up the audio to ensure every word was crystal clear

He knew it was a gamble

but he had no other choice

If he didn't do this now

he might never get another chance

He walked back down to the kitchen

keeping his head low and his hands hidden

Victoria ignored him as she passed by

too focused on the table settings to notice his presence

He found an opportunity to slip away into the library where Henderson was organizing the files

Sir

he whispered

his voice barely audible above the noise of the house

Henderson looked up

startled by the sudden intrusion

Leo

what are you doing here

You need to stay away from the staff

I have something for you

Leo said

his hands shaking as he reached for his sock

He pulled out the tiny drive and pushed it across the desk

This is the truth

Everything

Henderson stared at the drive with a look of confusion

What is this

Leo

You have to listen to it

He said

his voice firm and unwavering

It’s not just for me

It’s for my father

He needs to know who she really is

Henderson hesitated

his hand hovering over the drive

He knew the risks

he knew that Victoria was dangerous

But he also knew that Leo had been suffering

and he couldn't turn a blind eye to it anymore

He nodded slowly

sliding the drive into his pocket

I will listen

Leo

I promise

But you have to be careful

She is watching everyone

I know

Leo said

turning to leave

I’ve been watching her too

He walked out of the library with a heavy weight lifted off his shoulders

He felt lighter

as if he had finally shed a skin he had been forced to wear for too long

He returned to the kitchen to find Victoria waiting for him

her eyes narrowed in suspicion

Where have you been

she demanded

her voice sharp enough to cut through the air

I was in the bathroom

he replied

keeping his eyes on the floor

She stepped closer

her perfume overwhelming and cloying

Don't think I don't know you’re up to something

you little brat

You better keep your mouth shut tonight

or you’ll regret it

She turned and walked away

leaving him standing alone in the center of the room

He wasn't afraid of her threats anymore

for he knew that her power was already fading

The clock was ticking

and the end was rapidly approaching

He went to the living room to help with the decorations

his mind already miles away from the mansion

He was thinking about the future

a future where he wouldn't have to live in fear

A future where he could finally be himself

He looked at his father as he entered the room

a man who looked tired and worn out

He felt a surge of sadness for his father

a man who had been duped by a master manipulator

He resolved to make it right for him too

even if it meant breaking his heart in the process

The guests started arriving

the house filling up with the elite of Boston society

They were dressed in their finest clothes

talking about things that didn't matter

while the truth was hidden in a pocket in a small room

Leo felt like an observer in a play

a play he had helped write the ending to

He stood in the corner

watching the scene unfold

the smiles

the laughter

the absolute ignorance of what was to come

He felt a strange sense of power

a power he had never known before

May you like

He was the puppet master tonight

and he was ready to pull the strings
