Chapter 5 - The Unmasking

The atmosphere in the room shifted from shock to cold, hard realization
the silence heavy with the weight of the truth
Victoria’s hand went to her throat
as if she were trying to choke back the words that were still playing over the speakers
Richard stared at her
his gaze piercing through the layers of her deception
He looked at the audio equipment and then back at her
his voice low and dangerously calm
Victoria
what is this
He asked
his eyes searching for any sign of denial
But she had none left
The recording was crystal clear
indisputable evidence of her treatment of his son
She looked around the room
hoping to find an ally
but her friends were already backing away
disgusted by what they had heard
She was a social pariah now
the queen of her own crumbling kingdom
She tried to laugh
a hollow sound that echoed in the vast room
It’s a joke
she said
her voice shaking
A sick
cruel joke played by a boy who hates me
But nobody was laughing
The recording was too real
too visceral
too painful to be a joke
Leo entered the room
his steps slow and deliberate
He stopped in the center of the room
looking his stepmother in the eye
It’s not a joke
Victoria
he said
his voice strong and steady
It’s the truth
The guests fell silent
all eyes turning to the boy who had brought down the queen
Richard walked toward Leo
his hand resting on his shoulder
He felt the bruise on his elbow and the bandage on his hand
and his heart broke all over again
He looked at Victoria
and for the first time
he saw the woman he had married for exactly what she was
A parasite
just like she had called his son
He turned to the guests
his voice commanding the room
This party is over
he said
his tone final
Everyone out
The guests didn't need to be told twice
they hurried out of the mansion
eager to escape the scandal that was unfolding before their eyes
Victoria was left alone with Richard and Leo
the silence of the house once again returning
but this time it was different
It was the silence of a house that had been purged of its darkness
Victoria stood in the center of the room
her hands clenched into fists
her face a mask of pure hate
You think this changes anything
she spat at them
You think you’ve won
But you’re just a weak boy and a blind man
Richard didn't say a word
He simply pointed to the door
Get out
he said
his voice cold and devoid of any emotion
Victoria looked at him
shocked by his resolve
She had relied on his love
on his weakness
to maintain her control
But that was gone now
and she realized that she had nothing left
She turned and walked out of the room
her designer heels clicking rhythmically against the floor
a sound that had once been a source of terror for Leo
but now just sounded like the sound of a defeat
She was gone
and the house felt empty
not in a way that was lonely
but in a way that was clean
Leo looked at his father and saw a reflection of his own relief
They were both survivors now
and they were ready to start over
May you like
The nightmare was finally over
and the morning light was beginning to break through the clouds
