Chapter 4 - The Gathering Storm

The dining room was a sea of shimmering silk and flashing diamonds
the chandeliers casting a golden glow over the crowded tables
Richard stood at the head of the table
a glass of champagne in his hand
smiling at his wife as if she were the most perfect woman in the world
Victoria sat beside him
her poise impeccable
her smile a mask of carefully constructed perfection
She laughed at a joke from one of her friends
her voice ringing out with a warmth that she clearly didn't feel
Leo sat at the far end of the table
ignored by everyone except for the occasional glare from Victoria
He was hungry
but the anticipation of the moment was far more filling than any meal
He watched Henderson enter the room
his face unreadable
his eyes scanning the room before settling on Leo
He gave a small
almost imperceptible nod
and Leo felt his pulse quicken
It was time
The conversations around him grew louder
the wine flowing freely as the courses were served
Victoria was the center of attention
holding court with stories about her charitable works
She was a brilliant actress
a woman who had convinced everyone that she was a saint
But Leo knew the truth
and he was just waiting for the right moment to share it
He saw Henderson lean over to whisper something to his father
Richard’s brow furrowed in confusion
but he nodded and excused himself from the table
This was the signal
The moment the house would be turned upside down
Leo stood up
his heart hammering against his ribs
He felt like he was walking into a fire
but he was ready to burn
He walked toward the kitchen
where he knew the audio system was connected to the entire house
He had practiced this moment in his head a thousand times
the wiring
the bypass
the final execution of his plan
He reached the audio control panel
his hands steady despite the adrenaline coursing through his veins
He plugged in his own device
overriding the music that was playing for the guests
He took a deep breath
his fingers hovering over the play button
He knew that once he pressed this
there would be no going back
He looked at the small monitor and saw his father and Henderson talking in the hallway
He hit the button
and the sound of Victoria’s voice filled the room
It wasn't the sweet
melodic voice she used in front of her friends
it was the venomous
hateful voice he knew so well
How many times do I have to tell you
you little parasite
The room went silent
the laughter replaced by a collective gasp
Victoria froze
her eyes widening in shock as she heard her own voice echoing through the mansion
The guests looked at each other in confusion
not understanding where the sound was coming from
but the reality was quickly dawning on them
Victoria stood up
her chair screeching against the floor
She looked around the room
her face pale
her eyes darting from guest to guest
Who did this
she screamed
her voice trembling with rage
But nobody answered
for they were all too stunned by what they had just heard
The recording continued
the sound of the glass shattering echoing through the halls
the sound of Leo’s gasp
the sound of her cruel threats
It was a symphony of her own downfall
and it was playing for everyone to hear
Richard burst back into the room
his face flushed with anger and disbelief
He looked at his wife
and for the first time
he truly saw her
The mask was off
and the monster underneath was exposed for the world to see
The room erupted in whispers
the elite of Boston society turning against their own
Victoria looked at her husband
her face contorted in a mixture of fear and fury
She tried to speak
to explain
to lie her way out of it
but no words came out
for the truth was already speaking for itself
She was cornered
May you like
exposed
and alone
