Chapter 14 - The Midnight Trap

The private medical clinic of Doctor Alan Morrison was dark,
located in a wealthy suburb.
The rain had stopped,
leaving a thick,
creepy fog rolling through the empty streets.
Eleanor Vance walked up the front steps alone,
her shoulders tense as she pushed open the door.
Inside the lobby,
Doctor Morrison sat behind a large mahogany desk,
a glass of water nearby.
"Ah,
Eleanor,"
he smiled,
standing up to greet her with a warm,
fake smile.
"I knew you would see reason after the unfortunate events at the Meridian building."
"Do you have the share certificates with you?"
he asked,
extending his hand greedily.
"I have them right here,
Alan,"
Eleanor replied,
her voice shaking slightly as she pulled a folder.
"But I want your word that Julian will be released from custody safely tomorrow."
"Of course,"
the doctor chuckled,
taking the folder and opening it with eager fingers.
"Julian is no threat to me without his mother's wealth behind him anymore."
Suddenly,
the lights in the clinic flared to life with blinding brightness,
illuminating the corners.
The side doors burst open,
and Ethan Wright stepped into the room with his security team.
Behind him came four federal prosecutors,
accompanied by a team of armed marshals with badges.
"Step away from the desk,
Doctor Morrison,"
Ethan commanded,
his voice echoing in the clinic.
Morrison froze,
his face draining of all color as he saw me walk in behind Ethan.
I held the original leather-bound payroll ledger in my hands,
holding it up proudly.
"You thought we died in that fire,
didn't you?"
I said,
stepping forward with confidence.
"But I know how to survive the fires you light,
Alan."
"This ledger proves you paid Martha Marsh to kidnap me twenty-five years ago."
"And the federal agents have already tapped your phone conversations with Eleanor tonight."
The doctor looked around wildly,
realizing he was completely surrounded with no escape route left.
His kind persona melted away instantly,
replaced by the snarling face of a trapped beast.
"You think this changes anything?"
he hissed,
reaching into his drawer for a hidden weapon.
Before his hand could touch the handle,
Ethan surged forward with incredible,
lightning speed.
He pinned the doctor's arm to the desk,
disarming him before he could fire a shot.
The federal marshals slammed Morrison onto the polished floor,
clicking the heavy metal handcuffs on.
"Alan Morrison,
you are under arrest for murder,
kidnapping,
and corporate fraud,"
the lead agent stated.
As they dragged him away,
the doctor glared at me with pure,
burning hatred.
"You will never unlock that patent without me,
Vivian!"
he screamed as they pushed him out.
"The code died with your father,
you have nothing!"
I watched him leave,
feeling a profound sense of justice finally settling over my family name.
The primary monster had been captured,
and the truth was finally out in the open.
I turned to Eleanor,
who was leaning against the wall,
looking completely spent and broken.
"Thank you,
Eleanor,"
I said quietly,
nodding toward her.
"You did the right thing tonight,
for once in your life."
"What happens to me now?"
she whispered,
looking down at her trembling hands.
"You will still face charges for your financial crimes,"
I told her honestly.
"But I will speak to the prosecutor about your assistance in catching Morrison today."
"You won't spend the rest of your life in a cell,
but your empire is gone."
She nodded slowly,
accepting her fate as the agents led her out of the clinic gently.

The nightmare was finally drawing to a close,
and the light was returning to our lives.
