Chapter 17 - A New Dawn for Arthur

The first birthday of my son,
Arthur,
was celebrated on a gorgeous,
sunny summer afternoon.
The backyard of the Wright estate was decorated with bright blue and silver balloons everywhere.
Children from the local orphanage,
which our foundation sponsored,
were running around laughing happily.
I sat on a picnic blanket,
watching Arthur crawl toward a giant birthday cake with excitement.
He was growing fast,
his silver eyes becoming more brilliant and expressive every single day.
Ethan walked over,
holding a small beautifully wrapped package behind his back with a smirk.
"Happy birthday to the little tycoon,"
Ethan laughed,
sitting down on the grass beside us.
He handed the package to Arthur,
who tore into the paper with joyful,
messy enthusiasm.
Inside was a small,
custom-made silver watch engraved with his initials and the Wright family crest.
"A bit early for a watch,
don't you think?"
I joked,
nudging my brother's arm.
"Never too early to learn the value of perfect timing,"
Ethan replied with a wink.
"Just look at how his mother timed her corporate takeover of the Meridian empire."
We laughed together,
the sound echoing across the beautiful,
peaceful grounds of our ancestral home.
Doctor Morrison's clinic had been demolished,
replaced by a public park for children to play safely.
The old office building where I used to clean was now a center for scientific research.
My life had shifted so completely from those dark,
exhausting nights of mopping cold tile floors.
I looked down at my hands,
which no longer bore the chemical burns from industrial bleach solutions.
Instead,
they were smooth,
strong,
and capable of holding the future of a global medical empire.
"We have a board meeting tomorrow regarding the expansion into Asian markets,"
Ethan mentioned casually.
"The directors want the chairperson's final approval on the new laboratory designs in Tokyo."
"Tell them the approval is granted,
provided they hire local workers at fair wages,"
I stated.
"We are not going to become the corporate sharks that Eleanor Vance wanted us to be."
"Understood,
Madam Chairperson,"
Ethan smiled,
bowing his head in playful deference to my executive title.
Arthur reached up,
gently grabbing my silver necklace with his tiny,
sticky cake-covered fingers.
I kissed his cheek,
feeling a profound sense of absolute peace settling into my soul today.

We had survived the betrayal, the madness, and the fires of our enemies' greed.
And from the ashes of our past, we had built a beautiful, unyielding future.
