Chapter 19 - DORCAS’S APPEAL

Dorcas appealed one obstruction conviction.

The appellate court found the jury instruction did not clearly distinguish planning from a completed official-proceeding interference under that statute.

That count was vacated.

Her child-endangerment and assault convictions remained.

Headline:

WEXLEY GRANDMOTHER WINS APPEAL.

Quincy was fourteen.

“Is she innocent?”

“No.”

“Then why headline?”

“Headlines like verbs.”

He laughed.

Then I explained.

Courts correct mistakes.

Even for people we dislike.

Especially then.

“If rules only work when we want the result, they aren’t rules.”

“That sounds like something Naomi says.”

“It is.”

Dorcas completed the rest of her sentence and supervision.

No trust role restored.

No contact with Quincy unless he chose.

She lived comfortably.

Not ruined.

No morality play requiring poverty.
