Chapter 9 - THE THIRTY-ONE MINUTES

Naomi sat beside me.
Detective Ellis across the table.
A digital-forensics specialist played the recovered recording.
The camera had been inside Quincy’s dinosaur on a chair.
Video mostly showed ceiling and furniture.
Audio was clear.
Dorcas:
“He still tells her everything.”
Everett:
“He’s four.”
Dorcas:
“Exactly. Four-year-olds can learn rules.”
Everett:
“No closets.”
Dorcas:
“You sound like Maura.”
Everett:
“I’m serious.”
So he knew.
Not all.
Enough.
Then Quincy entered.
His voice.
“Daddy, Dino hungry.”
Everett laughed.
Normal.
For thirty seconds they sounded like father and son.
That made everything worse.
Everett:
“Buddy, Grandma’s going to ask you some questions later.”
Quincy:
“Why?”
Everett:
“Practice.”
Dorcas:
“Because tomorrow you talk to someone who helps families.”
Quincy:
“Mommy too?”
Silence.
Then Everett:
“Not tomorrow.”
My hands started shaking.
The audio continued.
Dorcas practicing.
Who makes you upset?
Where would you want to sleep?
Does Mommy ask too many questions?
Everett interrupted twice.
“Mom, don’t feed him answers.”
Dorcas replied:
“I’m giving him language.”
Then another adult conversation after Quincy left.
Everett:
“If this turns into coaching, I’m done.”
Dorcas laughed.
“You were done with your marriage seven months ago.”
My stomach tightened.
Everett:
“I want Quincy in Denver. I don’t want him traumatized.”
Dorcas:
“Then stop pretending Maura will cooperate.”
Everett:
“The judge decides.”
Dorcas:
“The judge listens to professionals. Professionals listen to children.”
Everett:
“He’s four.”
Dorcas:
“And four-year-olds repeat what they hear.”
The specialist paused.
Naomi looked at me.
“Ready?”
“No.”
“Do you want to stop?”
“No.”
We continued.
Dorcas:
“If he tells Harlow he’s scared of Maura, you get temporary leverage.”
Everett:
“He isn’t scared of her.”
A long silence.
Then Dorcas:
“Not yet.”
My entire body went cold.
Everett said:
“No.”
Firm.
Immediate.
Good.
Then:
“I said make him take this seriously. I did not say create fear.”
Dorcas:
“You said scare him.”
Everett:
“I meant about the move. About consequences.”
Dorcas:
“Same result.”
The nineteen-second clip.
Now context.
Still awful.
Slightly different.
Then Everett said:
“If you hurt him, this stops.”
Dorcas:
“You need me.”
Everett:
“No. I need him prepared.”
Dorcas:
“For what?”
Everett:
“For Harlow.”
Dorcas:
“For choosing.”
Everett:
“He is not choosing.”
Dorcas:
“Then make it feel like he is.”
The recovered clip ended there.
Not the entire forty-seven minutes.
The last sixteen were corrupted.
Detective Ellis said they were working on them.
I sat still.
The recording proved Dorcas intended to manufacture fear.
It also proved Everett pushed back on some of it.
And still left Quincy with her.
Still participated in secret practice.
Still planned Denver.
Still withheld the divorce.
Still discussed using Harlow without me.
Not innocent.
Not identical to Dorcas.
That distinction would matter later.
Then the forensic specialist said:
“There’s one more thing.”
He opened metadata.
The dinosaur camera had been moved at 6:42 p.m.
Placed directly facing the fireplace.
“By whom?”
Video frame.
Dorcas’s hand.
She had set the toy there herself before the incident.
Why?
Maybe accidental.
Maybe she wanted Quincy to see it.
Then one final recovered whisper, barely audible:
Dorcas to Everett.
“If Maura reacts the way you said she does, we’ll have everything we need.”
Everett answered.
“I never agreed to that.”
The clip ended.
The next morning was the emergency custody hearing.
May you like
And for the first time I realized the fireplace incident might not have been Dorcas losing control.
It might have been Dorcas trying to make me lose mine.
