Chapter 25 - THE CAMERA

At sixty-four, I cleaned out my safe.
Old passports.
Insurance papers.
Quincy’s baby bracelet.
The camera.
Small.
Blackened at one corner.
Battery dead forever.
I called Quincy.
“Do you want it?”
Silence.
“The camera?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
“Sure?”
“Yes.”
“What should I do?”
“Throw it away.”
That surprised me.
“Not archive?”
“No.”
“Evidence?”
“Copies exist where they need to.”
“History?”
Quincy laughed.
“Mom, I’m not donating the spy dinosaur camera to a museum.”
Fair.
I dropped it into electronic recycling.
That was all.
No ceremony.
Evidence became obsolete hardware.
The dinosaur remained.
Quincy had taken it years earlier.
As it should be.
