Chapter 16 - THE BLUE BOX

Amelia’s blue archive box eventually came home.
Not hidden.
Not shrine.
Stored in my office.
One evening I read everything.
Letters.
Trust drafts.
Notes.
A final memo to me.
Conrad,
If you are reading this, someone has finally convinced you that delegation is not the same thing as understanding.
I laughed.
Then cried.
Amelia continued:
Do not make Estelle responsible for protecting what I left her. She should be allowed to be a child while adults do the boring work correctly.
That became my rule.
No trust conversations at breakfast.
No telling Estelle:
Your mother left you eleven percent.
No using money to make her feel special.
She would learn gradually.
Then:
If you love again, love fully. Do not make another woman live in my shadow. But never demand Estelle shrink so someone else feels taller.
There.
Lorna had done exactly that.
I had almost helped by pretending conflict would disappear after marriage.
Amelia was not haunting us.
She had simply understood insecurity.
Mine.
May you like
Others’.
Human.
