Chapter 26 - ESTELLE’S DAUGHTER

Estelle became a mother at thirty-two.

Her daughter Amelia Grace.

Named partly for her mother.

Partly because she liked Amelia.

Good.

No inheritance ritual.

When Amelia Grace was four, she dropped a plate.

It shattered.

Everyone froze because toddlers sense drama.

Estelle crouched.

“Don’t move, honey. Glass.”

The little girl started crying.

“I’m sorry!”

“It’s a plate.”

“Are you mad?”

“No.”

“Do I clean?”

“You can help after I get the glass.”

I watched.

No knees.

No rag thrown.

No humiliation.

Just safety.

Later Estelle looked at me.

“I thought about it.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“You had the same face.”

She laughed.

“Trauma is annoying.”

“Yes.”

Then she handed me a broom.

May you like

“Make yourself useful.”

Perfect.
