Chapter 2 - SUNRISE AT SOUTH BEACH

At 6:30 AM on New Year's Day, the sun was just beginning to rise over the crystal-clear waters of South Beach, Miami.

Inside the oceanfront penthouse suite at the Grand Venetian Resort—a $3,500-a-night luxury suite paid for with my primary corporate American Express card—Evelyn Sterling was sitting on the terrace in a white silk robe, sipping champagne.

Beside her, Chloe was adjusting her sunglasses while her husband, Mark, was filming a video for his social media story, showing off the infinity pool overlooking the ocean.

"This is the life," Chloe sighed, taking a strawberry from a fruit platter. "David's bonus really came through this year. Mom, we should extend the trip until Sunday."

"Of course we will," Evelyn smirked, holding up her glass. "David makes over three hundred thousand dollars a year. He owes his family. If it weren't for my sacrifices raising him, he'd be nothing. That little plain girl he married thinks she can hoard his wealth? I don't think so."

Mark chuckled, laying back on a leather sun lounger. "Did you see her face when we packed up the nursery furniture? She looked like she was going to faint."

"Let her faint," Evelyn laughed coldly. "A little hard work builds character. She was getting too lazy anyway."

Suddenly, the electronic lock on the suite's front door gave a sharp, metallic BEEP.

The heavy oak door swung open violently, slamming against the wall.

Five uniformed Miami-Dade Police officers stepped into the foyer, led by two sharp-suited detectives carrying silver badges and a manila folder filled with legal documents.

"Evelyn Sterling? Chloe Sterling? Mark Davis?" the lead Detective asked in a voice like gravel.

Evelyn almost choked on her champagne, standing up abruptly from her chair. "What is the meaning of this?! Who gave you permission to enter our private suite?! Do you know who I am?!"

"Mrs. Sterling, sit down and keep your hands where we can see them," the Detective ordered coldly. "I am Detective Alvarez with Miami-Dade Financial Crimes, executing an emergency multi-jurisdictional arrest warrant issued by the State of New York."

Chloe jumped up, her face turning pale. "Warrant?! For what?! This is a mistake! My brother is a high-level executive!"

"Your brother, David Sterling, is the primary complainant," Detective Alvarez pulled out three pairs of heavy steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for Grand Larceny in the Second Degree, Identity Theft, Wire Fraud, and Felony Deprivation of Care to a Vulnerable Adult and Infant."

"What?!" Evelyn shrieked, backing away toward the glass railing. "David wouldn't do this! Maya lied to him! She's lying!"

"We have forty-eight hours of continuous 4K audio and video footage provided directly by Mr. Sterling," Detective Alvarez stepped forward, pinning Evelyn's arms behind her back with practiced efficiency. "We watched you steal his credit cards, strip his apartment of nursery furniture to fence on the black market, starve his wife while she was bleeding from surgery, and leave a newborn infant in an unheated room in freezing weather."

"Wait! Please!" Mark panicked, dropping his drink to the deck as an officer shoved him against the marble wall and clicked cuffs around his wrists. "I didn't do anything! It was Evelyn's idea! She said David wouldn't care!"

"Save it for the magistrate, Mr. Davis," Alvarez snapped.

As Evelyn was marched out through the luxury lobby of the Venetian in handcuffs, wearing her silk robe in front of dozens of wealthy hotel guests filming on their phones, her phone rang inside her purse.

Detective Alvarez pulled out the glowing phone and held it up to her face.

The caller ID displayed a single name: DAVID.

"Answer it," Evelyn wept, her voice trembling in terror. "Put him on speaker! Let me talk to my son!"

Alvarez pressed speaker and held the phone near her ear.

"David! David, baby!" Evelyn wailed frantically into the receiver. "The police are here! They're putting handcuffs on me! Tell them it's a mistake! Tell them we're family!"

Silence hung over the line for three agonizing seconds.

When my voice came through the speaker, it wasn't the voice of the dutiful son who had funded her lifestyle for ten years. It was the voice of a judge delivering a final sentence.

"Evelyn," I said softly, cold and emotionless. "The temperature in my apartment was thirty-eight degrees when I found my son. My wife lost two pints of blood while you were ordering champagne. You took fourteen thousand dollars meant for their survival and bought a hotel room."

"David, please! I'm your mother!" she screamed, tears running down her makeup.

May you like

"I don't have a mother anymore," I replied calmly. "You have twenty minutes before your bail hearing is denied. Have a safe flight back to New York in police custody."
