Chapter 8 - THE SHIFT OF DESTINY

Two years later.
My engineering firm, Sterling Logistics & Defense Systems, won a landmark three-hundred-million-dollar federal contract to design secure medical supply networks for disaster relief zones across the country.
Our main corporate headquarters in Lower Manhattan occupied the top three floors of a shimmering glass tower overlooking the harbor.
I sat in my corner executive office, reviewing our quarterly expansion reports, when my executive assistant knocked on the door.
"Mr. Sterling," she said respectfully. "Your 2:00 PM appointment is here."
"Send them in," I smiled.
The door opened, and Maya walked in wearing an elegant cream-colored business suit, holding a small leather gift box in her hands.
"Happy fifth anniversary, my love," she smiled, walking over to my desk.
I stood up, pulling her into my arms and kissing her deeply. "You didn't have to come all the way to the office for our anniversary."
"I wanted to give you your present in person," she said, handing me the small box.
I opened the velvet lid. Inside lay a custom-engraved silver compass. On the back, in delicate cursive lettering, were the words:
“To the man who always finds his way home to protect us. Happy 5th Anniversary, David.”
Below the compass lay a small white medical envelope.
I pulled out the paper inside. It was an ultrasound scan showing a tiny, healthy heartbeat.
My breath caught in my throat. I looked up at Maya, tears of pure joy filling my eyes.

"We're having a baby girl," Maya whispered, her smile radiant with boundless happiness.
I picked her up in my arms, swinging her around in my office while she laughed, my heart overflowing with a love so deep and powerful that no past betrayal could ever touch it.
