Chapter 3 - THE AUDIT OF BETRAYAL

By 2:00 PM on January 2nd, the Manhattan District Attorney's office had established a task force in room 402 of the criminal court building.

I sat at a long mahogany conference table alongside my chief corporate legal counsel, Victoria Sterling (no relation, a legendary corporate defense attorney in New York), and Deputy District Attorney Richard Cole.

Across the room hung a massive whiteboard covered in financial spreadsheets, bank statements, and property deeds.

"David," Victoria placed a thin leather folder in front of me. "We've completed the preliminary audit of every bank account, credit line, and real estate asset associated with your mother, sister, and brother-in-law over the last five years."

"Show me," I said, sipping black coffee.

Victoria opened the file, pointing her gold pen at a series of massive financial transactions.

"When you bought your mother that two-bedroom condo in Queens three years ago, you placed the deed in a revocable family trust with yourself named as the primary trustee," Victoria explained. "Six months ago, while you were deployed on your defense contract project in Europe, Evelyn forged your signature on a quitclaim deed, transferred full ownership of the $750,000 condo to her own name, and took out a $400,000 home equity line of credit."

My jaw tightened. "Where did the four hundred thousand go?"

"Here," Victoria tapped a second chart. "Mark used $180,000 of it to open a high-end sports lounge in Brooklyn that went bankrupt within four months due to tax evasion and illegal gambling on site. Chloe used $120,000 to buy luxury jewelry and leasing a Porsche under your corporate business name. And your mother spent the remaining $100,000 funding high-stakes poker trips in Atlantic City."

"They didn't just neglect Maya," Deputy DA Cole interjected, leaning forward over his arms. "They were systematically bleeding you dry before you could ever return to the United States to discover what they had done. They calculated that Maya was too gentle and meek to ever speak up, and they used your deployment schedule against you."

"What is their current bail status?" I asked.

"Denied," Cole answered with a cold smile. "The judge viewed the security camera footage of Maya bleeding on the kitchen floor while your mother taunted her. The judge classified all three of them as extreme flight risks and severe public safety threats. They are currently being held at Rikers Island pending grand jury indictment."

I pulled out my tablet and tapped a series of commands into my corporate banking portal.

"Victoria," I said, looking my attorney dead in the eye. "I want every asset tied to that trust seized immediately. I want a civil forfeiture action filed against Mark's remaining commercial assets, Chloe's Porsche repossessed by nightfall, and an emergency order of protection locking them out of every property I own."

"And the Queens condo?" Victoria asked.

"Put a foreclosure notice on the front door tomorrow morning," I instructed. "When Evelyn gets out of prison, she won't even have a porch to sit on."
