Chapter 5 - THE RECOVERY AT THE HAVEN

Three weeks later.
The afternoon sun streamed through the expansive glass bay windows of our new brownstone in Brooklyn Heights—a quiet, heavily secured three-story home overlooking the East River and the Manhattan skyline.
Maya was resting in a plush, reclining armchair wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket. Her cheeks had regained their natural rosy color, her surgical wound was cleanly healed following two minor reconstructive procedures at the private clinic, and her smile had returned.
In her arms, small Liam was fast asleep, glowing with health, his weight up by two pounds thanks to specialized medical care and proper nourishment.
I walked into the sunlit living room holding a tray with fresh organic berry tea, warm soup, and a plate of sliced fruit.
"David, you don't have to keep pampering me like this," Maya laughed softly, her voice rich and full of life. "The doctor said I can walk around properly now."
"You are never making your own soup in this house again," I smiled, setting the tray down on the mahogany side table and sitting on the ottoman beside her. "How is Liam doing?"
"He slept four hours straight," she looked down at our son with eyes filled with boundless devotion. "He's so strong, David... Just like his father."
She reached out and took my hand, her thumb tracing the ring on my finger. "I received a letter today from the District Attorney's office. They said the grand jury returned a full twenty-two-count indictment against Evelyn, Chloe, and Mark."
My face remained calm. "I know. D.A. Cole called me this morning."
"Are you... are you okay, David?" Maya looked at me with deep concern, her gentle heart still worrying about my pain despite everything she had endured. "I know they're your family. I know how much it hurts to cut them out completely."
I leaned over, pressing my forehead gently against hers, breathing in the scent of her lavender soap and clean hair.
"My family is right here in this chair," I whispered softly. "They didn't just hurt you, Maya. They tried to destroy the future we built. Protecting you and Liam isn't a burden... it's the greatest honor of my life."
Suddenly, my phone chimed on the table. It was a secure text from my financial manager:
FORECLOSURE AUCTION COMPLETED: Queens condo sold for $780,000. $400,000 line of credit fully satisfied. Remaining $380,000 equity legally recovered and deposited directly into Liam Sterling's Irrevocable Educational Trust.

I showed the screen to Maya.
"They tried to steal our son's future," I smiled warmly. "Now, their stolen home is paying for his Harvard tuition."
