Chapter 14 - The Ledger of Blood

We spent four hours inside the State Attorney’s conference room as federal auditors and criminal investigators cataloged the contents of Box 408.
The evidence was overwhelming.
The cassette tapes contained crisp, clear recordings of private meetings inside the Paradise Valley mansion. Victor Hale’s voice echoed through the small desktop speakers, discussing bribery rates for county judges, fraudulent land appraisals, and offshore shell accounts used to launder tens of millions of dollars.
Then came the final tape, recorded three weeks before my father’s death.
“If you don’t sign the trust transfer, Richard, Margaret will make sure you don't wake up from your next treatment,” Victor’s recorded voice threatened. “Carla has already arranged the prescription switch with the private nurse.”
My father’s weak, trembling voice answered on the tape: “My son will find out, Victor. Marcus isn't blind.”
“Marcus will receive his inheritance in cash and keep his mouth shut if he knows what’s good for him,” Victor replied.
I sat at the conference table, my head buried in my hands, feeling as if the floor had dropped out beneath me. The reality of my mother’s betrayal hit me with physical weight.
Irene placed her hand on my shoulder, squeezing tightly.
“It’s over, Marcus,” she said softly. “The truth is out.”
Lead Prosecutor David Miller closed the leather binder and looked at us with a grim expression.

“This is enough to freeze every asset tied to Hale Development,” Miller declared. “We’re issuing arrest warrants for Victor Hale, Margaret Sterling, and Carla Vance within the hour.”
“Make sure my mother doesn't leave the state,” I said, looking up with cold, clear eyes. “She belongs in a cell.”
