Chapter 42 - The Midnight Escape

|

We dove into the back of the van just as an unmarked tactical SUV tore around the corner, its headlights blinding us in the narrow alley.

"Hang on!" Julian yelled from the driver's seat.

He threw the van in reverse, slamming the gas pedal to the floor. The heavy steel bumper of our van crashed into the front grille of the syndicate SUV, deploying their airbags and shattering their headlights. Julian expertly spun the steering wheel, executing a flawless J-turn, and rocketed out into the chaotic Miami traffic.

Irene slumped against the cargo wall, exhausted and shivering in her soaking wet dress. I grabbed a tactical blanket from a supply crate and wrapped it tightly around her shoulders.

"Did we get anything?" Julian asked, weaving through the crowded intersections to lose any potential tails.

Irene reached into her wet, torn dress and pulled out a small, waterproof USB drive. "When the sprinklers went off and the smoke deployed, Thorne dropped his tablet. I managed to rip this drive from the port before we jumped."

Julian’s eyes widened in the rearview mirror. "You stole his active data drive? Irene, you are incredible. Plug it into the central terminal back there."

I booted up the van’s mobile server and inserted the drive. The screen flickered, instantly bypassed Thorne's biometric locks because the drive was already actively paired.

Rows of flight manifests, bank transfers, and heavily encrypted coordinates scrolled across the screen.

"Look at this," I said, tapping the monitor. "Thorne isn't just fleeing. He booked a private ghost flight out of Miami Executive Airport tonight. Destination: Geneva, Switzerland."

"The Alpine Vault," Irene whispered, recognizing the bank name in the manifest. "My father told me about it. It’s an underground fortress built beneath a mountain. It’s where the syndicate keeps the physical bearer bonds, the blackmail files, and the master server. If Thorne gets inside that vault, he can initiate a global purge protocol."

"He can erase his identity and burn the entire network to the ground," Julian realized. "He'll disappear forever, and he'll kill anyone who can tie him to the Architect. Starting with us."

I looked at Irene, then at Julian. "Get us to an airstrip. We're going to Switzerland."
