Chapter 21 - The Unopened Box

|

Three months after settling into the Phoenix suburban house, a courier delivered a registered package from a corporate law firm in Zurich, Switzerland.

I sat on the front porch holding the thick paper envelope, the scent of the lemon tree drifting in the morning breeze. Grace was playing on a cotton blanket near my feet, stacking wooden blocks with focused intensity.

Irene walked out holding two cups of coffee, stopping when she saw the red wax seal on the envelope.

“What is that?” she asked, setting the mugs down on the small porch table.

“It’s from Switzerland,” I said, inspecting the foreign stamps. “An offshore firm called Keller & Braun.”

I cut open the seal with my pocketknife and pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment, accompanied by a small metallic keycard.

“Mr. Marcus Sterling,” the letter read in formal English. “We are writing to inform you of a secondary trust established in 2018 by your late father, Richard Sterling. The asset vault in Zurich contains thirty million dollars in non-liquid bonds. Under the terms of the trust, access is granted exclusively to you upon the total liquidation of Hale Development.”

I stared at the number on the paper. Thirty million dollars—money my father had hidden away before Victor Hale could seize it.

Irene sat down beside me, reading over my shoulder.

“What are you going to do with it?” she asked quietly.

I looked at the keycard in my hand, then at Grace, who was laughing as her tower of blocks tumbled over onto the rug.

“I don’t want it,” I said.

Irene looked at me in surprise. “Marcus, that’s your father’s money.”

“That money was born out of fear, Irene,” I said, folding the letter back up. “It was created in the dark while my family was tearing itself apart. If I bring that fortune into this house, we bring the shadows back with it.”

I placed the envelope and the keycard back into the package, sealing it shut.

“Send it to the victim restitution fund,” I said firmly. “Let it pay for the lives Victor destroyed.”

Irene smiled, a deep, beautiful warmth filling her eyes. She leaned over and kissed my cheek.

“You really are free, aren't you?” she whispered.
