Chapter 35 - A Deal in the Dark

Miller froze, his eyes widening in shock as he stared down the barrel of my rifle. Julian stepped out from the opposite side of the hangar, flanking him perfectly.
"You have three seconds to drop the weapon, Miller," Julian warned, his voice cold and devoid of mercy. "One... two..."
Miller opened his hand, letting his suppressed pistol clatter onto the cracked asphalt. He raised his hands slowly, a nervous sweat breaking out across his forehead. "Listen to me," he stammered. "You don't understand what you're dealing with. Thorne owns everyone. If I didn't cooperate, he was going to kill my family!"
"So you decided to help him kill mine?" I stepped closer, pressing the cold steel barrel of my rifle against his chest. "Where is Elias Thorne keeping the master ledger?"
"I don't know!" Miller panicked, his eyes darting between Julian and me. "I swear! I'm just a cleaner! I clean up the messes!"
Julian stepped forward, grabbing Miller by the collar of his suit and slamming him violently against the side of the unmarked sedan. "You know something, Miller. Or we leave you out here for the coyotes."
Miller swallowed hard, terrified. "Okay! Okay! The gala in Miami... it’s not just a charity event. Thorne is liquidating his American assets. He's transferring his entire wealth to an offshore account tomorrow night at midnight."
"Where is the transfer taking place?" I demanded.
"In his penthouse," Miller gasped. "The top floor of the Ocean Pearl Hotel. But it's a fortress. He has an army of private mercenaries up there. You can't get close to him."
I stepped back, lowering my rifle slightly. "We don't need an army. We just need an invitation."

I looked at Julian. "Take his badge, his federal ID, and his secure comms. Tie him up in the hangar. Let the feds find him tomorrow."
As Julian stripped the corrupt agent of his gear, I looked up at the darkening sky. Elias Thorne thought he was untouchable behind his money and his mercenaries. But tomorrow night in Miami, he was going to find out what happens when you threaten a man who has everything to lose.
