Chapter 16 - Iron Cuffs and Rain

|
The news cameras were already waiting at the bottom of the driveway as the convoy of law enforcement vehicles pulled out of the Paradise Valley estate.
Flashbulbs illuminated the dark interior of the police cruiser where my mother sat, her face turned away from the glass.
I stood on the wet porch with Irene, watching the red taillights vanish down the quiet desert street. The mansion behind us was cold, dark, and silent, completely stripped of the grand illusion it had maintained for twenty years.
Two days later, Victor Hale was apprehended by federal marshals at a private airfield near Nogales while attempting to board a plane to South America.
The legal system moved with terrifying speed once the evidence from Box 408 was made public.
The truth took months.
There were investigations, hearings, financial audits, criminal trials, and more documents than I could have imagined. The deposit box contained everything Irene had said it would: payment records, recordings, names, offshore accounts, and proof that Victor Hale had built a criminal network through bribery, fraud, intimidation, and murder.
My mother had helped conceal my father’s death.
Carla had helped manage the money and silence anyone who got too close.
Victor had controlled them both through fear, greed, and the promise of power.
But they had still made their choices.
At trial, my mother cried when she testified.

Carla did too.
This time, I did not look away.
