Chapter 2 - THE PAPER TRAIL

By 8:00 p.m. that evening, I was back in the warm, quiet sanctuary of my home in the foothills outside Denver—the historic stone and timber residence my father had hand-restored before his passing.
I sat at my oak desk in the library, illuminated only by the soft glow of three laptop monitors.
I pulled up the corporate filings for Vance Capital Holdings—the shell company Julian had registered in Delaware eight months ago.
Using my private forensic software, I traced the digital breadcrumbs behind Adrian’s "new business venture."
The truth was even worse than I had anticipated.
Adrian hadn't just been cheating on me; he had been systematically funneling small, undetected amounts from our joint accounts into Vance Capital for over a year.
Furthermore, three weeks ago, he had presented me with what he claimed were "standard insurance update documents" for our home.
I remembered the evening vividly. He had brought me a glass of Pinot Noir, massaged my shoulders, and kissed my cheek, saying, “Trust me, Victoria. You’re my wife. Why wouldn’t you trust me?”
I had signed the papers.
Or rather, I had signed the papers I thought were insurance updates.
What Adrian didn't realize was that I never sign any legal document without placing a microscopic digital tracking mark—a custom forensic watermark—next to my signature.
I pulled up the land registry database. Sure enough, a forged deed transfer had been drafted, attempting to assign seventy percent of my father's property to Vance Capital.
However, because of the altered watermark, the transaction had flagged a provisional hold in the state land system—a hold that only I could clear or trigger.
I tapped my pen against the desk, a quiet smile forming on my lips.
“You brought a paper knife to a cannon fight, Adrian,” I whispered to the empty room.
My phone chimed with a text message from Adrian:
“Stuck in Chicago for an emergency client dinner, babe. So sorry! Back tomorrow afternoon. Love you so much.”

I typed back instantly:
“No problem at all, darling. Take your time. Everything at home is perfectly taken care of.”
