Chapter 5 - THE SHOW BEFORE THE STORM

That evening, Adrian was unusually attentive.

He helped set the dinner table, opened a bottle of expensive Cabernet, and poured two glasses.

“To our future,” Adrian toasted, raising his glass high.

“To the truth,” I corrected gently, clinking my glass against his.

He paused for a fraction of a second, his brow furrowing slightly. “The truth?”

“To building something real,” I clarified smoothly, taking a slow sip. “You’ve spent years building your dream, Adrian. I just want to make sure everyone gets exactly what they deserve.”

“Of course,” he smiled, completely missing the razor-sharp edge beneath my words. “Hard work always pays off.”

After dinner, Adrian retired early to his study, claiming he needed to prep his slide deck for tomorrow’s 11:00 a.m. presentation.

I stood on the back porch, looking out over the moonlit mountain ridge that my father had loved so deeply.

My father used to tell me: “Victoria, a dishonest man always leaves a trail of dust behind him. You don't need to chase him; you just need to wait for the wind to clear the air.”

I pulled out my phone and sent a brief text to Detective Ramirez:

“Target is fully committed. Boardroom presentation confirmed for 11:00 AM tomorrow.”

Her reply came back instantly:

“SWAT and financial crimes task force ready. See you at eleven, Victoria.”
