Chapter 10 - A New Chapter For Grace And Lily

The following morning,

the sun rose brightly over the expansive lawns of the Westbrook estate,

casting golden rays across the manicured rose gardens and the sparkling fountains.

Inside the small, cozy apartment in downtown Connecticut,

Grace sat at her modest wooden kitchen table,

staring down at the folded paper Caleb had handed her the night before.

Her hands shook slightly as she unfolded it.

It wasn't just an employment contract update;

it was a formal promotion to Director of Estate Operations,

complete with a quadrupled salary,

comprehensive health benefits,

and a fully funded college savings account for Lily,

signed in Caleb’s bold, elegant handwriting.

Lily was sitting on the living room rug,

playing happily with a wooden puzzle Grace had bought her weeks ago,

completely unaware of how drastically their entire world had changed overnight.

Grace pressed a hand to her mouth,

hot tears of relief and gratitude finally spilling over her cheeks.

For the first time in five years since her husband passed away,

she didn't have to calculate every single grocery bill down to the last penny.

She didn't have to lie awake at night wondering what would happen if the car broke down again or if Lily caught another bout of pneumonia.

Her phone buzzed loudly on the wooden table.

Grace picked it up,

seeing an unknown number flashing on the screen.

She swiped to answer.

"Hello?"

Grace said,

her voice trembling slightly.

"Good morning,

Grace,"

Caleb’s deep, familiar voice came through the receiver,

calm and steady.

"I hope I'm not calling too early."

Grace straightened up instinctively,

smoothing down her sweater.

"No,

Mr. Westbrook.

I'm awake.

I... I just wanted to thank you again for the paperwork.

It's too much.

I don't even know how to begin repaying you."

"You don't have to repay me for anything,

Grace,"

Caleb replied,

a hint of a smile audible in his tone.

"In fact,

I'm calling because I need your help with something important today."
