Chapter 17 - The Quiet Grace Of A New Beginning

Within a week,

the Mercer family's spectacular financial collapse dominated the front pages of every financial journal in the country.

Arthur Mercer's real estate empire was dismantled,

his assets liquidated to pay off insurmountable debts,

and the high-society elite who had once fawned over Sloane suddenly pretended they had never even known her.

At the Westbrook estate,

however,

an entirely different kind of atmosphere had taken root.

The halls no longer felt cold and intimidating;

they echoed with warmth, efficiency, and the occasional sweet laughter of a three-year-old girl.

Grace sat at her new mahogany desk in the executive administrative office,

reviewing supply orders with effortless confidence.

Her old life of constant anxiety and financial terror felt like a distant, faded nightmare.

A soft knock sounded at her door.

Before she could even look up,

the door opened,

revealing Caleb standing in the doorway,

holding a familiar dark brown leather writing journal in his hand.

"Are you too busy for your boss?"

Caleb asked with a gentle, teasing smile.

Grace looked up,

her heart doing a familiar, fluttering somersault that she was finally learning to embrace.

"Never too busy for you,

Caleb,"

she replied,

setting her pen down.

Caleb walked across the room,

pulling out the chair opposite her desk and sitting down.

He placed the leather journal on the polished wood surface between them.

"I've been using this every day,"

Caleb said quietly,

his dark eyes locking onto hers.

"Every board meeting, every acquisition strategy, every major corporate decision.

And every time I open it,

I remember whose daughter reminded me what real human kindness looks like."

Grace’s cheeks warmed slightly,

though she held his gaze with steady, quiet confidence.

"Lily still talks about the watercolor paints you gave her,"

Grace said softly.

"She painted a portrait of you yesterday.

May you like

It has twenty arms, blue hair, and a very crooked red bow."

Caleb threw his head back and laughed—a rich, booming sound that filled the entire office with pure joy.
