Chapter 3 - The Public Confrontation That Shook The Estate

The silence on the terrace became so profound that the distant splashing of the garden fountain sounded like crashing waves.

Sloane stepped closer,

reaching out to touch the lapel of Caleb’s jacket in an attempt to regain control of the narrative.

"Really,

Caleb,"

she whispered sweetly,

though her eyes betrayed a sudden flicker of anxiety,

"let the staff deal with the cleanup.

Everyone is watching us,

and this little incident is completely ruining the atmosphere of your birthday celebration."

Caleb raised his right hand,

stopping Sloane’s touch mere inches from his chest without ever making physical contact.

"Sloane,"

Caleb spoke,

his voice low,

resonant,

and carrying across the entire terrace without a microphone.

"Whose trash are you referring to?"

Sloane blinked,

taken aback by the directness and the chilling lack of emotion in his tone.

"The... the child's,"

Sloane stammered slightly,

recovering her composure with practiced arrogance.

"That little cleaning woman's daughter.

She wandered in here looking for handouts,

holding some crumpled paper.

It had no business being here."

Caleb turned the small gold package over in his hands,

his thumb brushing softly against the crooked red bow.

"This is not trash,

Sloane,"

Caleb said,

every syllable dropping like a lead weight onto the marble floor.

"This was a gift.

A gift made with genuine care,

saved for,

and delivered with more honesty than anything this entire room has seen tonight."

Murmurs erupted immediately among the guests.

People began shifting uncomfortably,

realizing the massive social blunder that had just occurred in broad daylight.

Sloane’s face flushed beneath her expensive makeup,

her pride deeply wounded at being corrected in front of three hundred elite witnesses.

"A gift?"

Sloane scoffed,

her voice rising defensively.

"From a servant's brat?

Caleb,

you cannot seriously be comparing a piece of childish junk to the diamond chronographs and designer art pieces sitting on that table.

I was maintaining the standards of your home."

Caleb’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits.

"Standards?"

Caleb repeated the word as if it tasted like ash in his mouth.

"You mistake cruelty for standards,

Sloane.

You mistake arrogance for elegance.

And for three years,

I was foolish enough to let your polished exterior blind me to the hollow, rotting core underneath."

Sloane stepped back,

her pale eyes widening in genuine shock as the realization of what he was saying began to dawn on her.
