Chapter 10 - THE DAWN OF DECEPTION

The sun rose over Zapopan,
casting long golden shadows across the pristine living room.
Renata woke up early,
her face glowing with the satisfaction of a plan near completion.
She walked down the stairs,
expecting to find Andrés broken and compliant from the news.
Instead,
she found him sitting at the dining table,
reading the morning newspaper calmly.
A fresh pot of coffee was brewing,
its rich aroma filling the modern kitchen.
Good morning,
my love,
Renata said,
her voice as sweet as honey as she approached him.
Did you manage to sleep well after our difficult conversation last night,
she asked.
Andrés looked up,
folding the newspaper with methodical precision.
I slept well enough,
Renata,
he replied,
his voice completely steady and neutral.
The air in the Sierra makes you appreciate a soft bed,
even when things are complicated.
Renata poured herself a cup of coffee,
watching him closely over the rim of her porcelain mug.
Have you thought about the documents I gave you,
she inquired gently,
testing the waters.
The doctor says time is of the essence,
and we must protect your mother.
Andrés nodded,
placing his hands flat on the table.
I reviewed the paperwork,
and it seems very thorough,
he lied smoothly.
However,
legal matters require careful steps,
especially when property and health are involved.
Renata’s eyes flashed with a temporary impatience,
but she quickly hid it behind a soft sigh.
Of course,
darling,
but please do not take too long,
she urged.
Every day she spends in that state is a danger to herself and to us.
Andrés smiled a small,
controlled smile that did not reach his eyes.
Do not worry,
Renata,
everything will be handled properly,
he promised.
He had already received confirmation of his military leave,
granting him two weeks of absolute freedom.

The soldier was off duty,
and the prosecutor was officially on the clock.
