Chapter 18 - THE NEIGHBORHOOD WATCHERS

The sudden sound of heavy sirens echoed through the quiet streets of Zapopan,
breaking the evening peace.
Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the front windows of the house,
casting long shadows.
Andrés stood up from the table,
walking over to open the front door for the arriving authorities.
Several marked police cruisers and a black van from the Prosecutor’s Office lined the street.
The neighbors,
including Mrs. Lucha,
stepped out onto their porches,
whispering in absolute shock.
They expected to see Mrs. Teresa being carried out in a straightjacket,
as Renata had promised.
Instead,
two uniformed officers entered the house with a formal warrant in their hands.
Mateo walked in behind them,
nodding respectfully to Andrés as he pointed toward the dining room.
Renata Robles,
you are under arrest for corporate fraud,
forgery,
and elder abuse,
Mateo declared officially.
Renata stood up,
her eyes wild as she looked around for any possible escape route.
This is a mistake,
my husband is using his military influence to frame me,
she screamed to the officers.
The officers did not listen,
grabbing her arms and pulling them behind her back to snap the handcuffs on.
The cold metal clicked loudly,
the exact sound of her definitive defeat.
As they led her out the front door,
the neighbors gasped in collective realization.
The perfect,
saintly wife in the beige dress was being escorted out as a criminal.
Mrs. Lucha crossed herself again,
this time looking at Andrés with a mixture of awe and deep respect.

The truth had finally broken through the beautiful lie,
clearing the poison from the neighborhood.
