Chapter 19 - THE SHADOWS OF THE PAST

The house felt incredibly vast and quiet after the police cars drove away into the night.
Andrés walked up to his mother’s room,
carrying a fresh set of clean,
white sheets.
Together,
they remade the bed,
restoring the comfort and dignity that had been stripped away.
Mrs. Teresa sat down,
feeling the soft fabric beneath her fingers for the first time in months.
The Sierra was dangerous,
Andrés,
but I never expected the real enemy to sleep in our home,
she murmured.
The enemy always chooses the place where you least expect them,
Mother,
that is how they survive,
he replied.
He walked over to the dresser,
picking up the heavy gold bracelet he had once given to Renata.
He looked at it for a long moment,
remembering the days when he believed her smiles were real.
He dropped it into a trash bin near the door,
letting the expensive metal hit the bottom with a dull thud.
It was a relic of a life built on a foundation of complete deception,
and he wanted no part of it.
I am sorry I wasn't here to protect you sooner,
he said,
his voice heavy with a son’s guilt.
Do not apologize,
my son,
your training is what saved us both in the end,
she comforted him.
You came back exactly when you were supposed to,
like a true commander.
Andrés looked out the window at the quiet street,
knowing his life would never be the same.
The marriage was over,
the house was stained,
but his family’s honor remained completely intact.
