Chapter 20 - THE SILENT TRIUMPH

A week passed,
and the morning sun shone brightly over the grand house in Zapopan.
The dark curtains were gone from the upper windows,
replaced by light,
flowing drapes that let in the breeze.
Mrs. Teresa was sitting on the front porch,
her white hair beautifully combed and a cup of hot coffee in her hand.
She chatted warmly with Mrs. Lucha,
who had walked over to apologize for being so easily deceived.
Andrés stepped out onto the porch,
wearing a clean civilian shirt instead of his heavy military uniform.
He looked around the garden,
feeling a true sense of peace settle over his heart at last.
The legal proceedings were moving quickly,
with Renata facing twenty years in a federal prison.
The offshore funds had been frozen and returned to his mother’s accounts,
securing her future completely.
His phone rang once more,
and he answered it with a calm,
relaxed smile.
Captain Robles,
your extension has been approved,
take all the time you need,
his colonel stated.
Thank you,
sir,
the crisis is fully contained,
and the perimeter is secure,
Andrés replied.
He hung up,
slipping the phone into his pocket as he walked over to his mother.
She looked up at him,
her eyes bright and full of life once more,
devoid of fear.
What are your plans for today,
my son,
she asked gently,
patting the wooden chair beside her.
Andrés sat down,
breathing in the fresh,
clean air of a brand new morning.
I think I will just sit here with you,
Mother,
and enjoy the quiet,
he answered.
The chessboard was empty,
the pieces were packed away,
and the game was officially over.

The soldier had won his final battle at home,
and the silence was finally beautiful.
