Chapter 9 - THE COLD SMILE

The clock on the wall struck three in the morning,

the sound heavy in the silent house.

Andrés quietly stood up from the desk,

ensuring no trace of his digital intrusion remained.

He walked back through the dark hallway,

stepping carefully to avoid the creaking floorboards.

He reached his mother’s door,

inserting the silver key with absolute precision.

He turned it slowly,

opening the door just a few inches to avoid making a sound.

Mrs. Teresa was awake,

sitting upright on the bare mattress as if expecting him.

She barely opened her eyes,

her body exhausted but her mind completely alert.

Tomorrow you will be embarrassed,

she whispered,

her voice trembling with a mother’s worry.

She will try to humiliate you in front of everyone,

to show I am mad.

Her mother looked down at the bruises on her doll,

her fingers tracing the torn fabric.

Then she looked up at her son,

her eyes searching his face for an answer.

How confused do I look to you,

Andrés,

she asked,

a hint of sadness in her voice.

Andrés did not smile,

his face remaining a mask of grim determination.

He knelt beside her once more,

pressing a reassuring hand against her shoulder.

You look like a survivor,

Mother,

he whispered back,

his voice filled with absolute conviction.

She looked at him,

and then,

for the first time in months,

she smiled.

It was not a smile of relief,

but one of profound understanding and shared strategy.

And that smile,

cold and serene,

was the first real sign of the storm to come.

It was the smile of a family that did not break under pressure,

that knew how to fight back.

Renata still had no idea who she had truly fallen for,

or what kind of man she had married.

She thought she was playing with a simple soldier,

a man bound by duty and easily deceived.

She did not know she had challenged an investigator,

a man who dismantled empires of fraud for a living.

The game was far from over,

and the pieces were finally moving in his favor.
