Chapter 1 - THE SHATTERED SANCTUARY OF SILENCE

The triage nurse called my name,

the sound echoed through the room,

it felt cold and distant,

the walls were pale green,

the floor was shiny tile,

the lights were too bright,

they hurt my eyes badly,

the blood on my shirt was dry,

it had turned stiff now,

it was dark brown,

crusted around the collar,

scratching against my skin,

I stood up too fast,

the entire waiting room tilted,

the chairs seemed to move,

the people blurred together,

my mother rose with me,

she grabbed my weak elbow,

her fingers were trembling,

she pretended to support me,

as if she had been helpful,

as if she had held pressure,

on my bleeding scalp before,

during the long agonizing drive,

from our house in Dayton,

Ohio,

but she had done nothing,

she had only driven fast,

while staring at the road,

she had spent the drive talking,

her voice was tight,

it was incredibly shaky,

she kept repeating one phrase,

Logan didn't mean to do it,

you know your brother well,

he just gets upset sometimes,

then the anger passes quickly,

it is over in a second,

we are not reporting this,

we cannot call the police,

not reporting this at all,

she said it ten times,

maybe it was twenty times,

she wanted me to agree,

she wanted me to lie,

she treated my split scalp,

and the warm blood flowing,

flowing down my pale neck,

like a silly misunderstanding,

a small accident between siblings,

inside the examination room,

the physician’s assistant arrived,

she used shiny metal scissors,

she cut away my hair,

the sticky hair near the wound,

she gasped very quietly,

she hissed under her breath,

that is very deep,

she whispered to herself,

mom stepped in immediately,

she spoke before I could,

he tripped on the rug,

she lied without blinking,

they were arguing over something,

and he just tripped accidentally,

the assistant did not believe her,

she gave her a flat look,

a look full of cold judgment,

then she left the room,

she went to get the doctor,

I sat on the table alone,

the paper sheet crinkled loudly,

it reacted to my movements,

my hands were shaking badly,

they rested in my lap,

the room smelled like chemicals,

it smelled of strong antiseptic,

and harsh industrial bleach,

my head pulsed with pain,

every heartbeat caused a throb,

the pain was blinding now,

under the fluorescent lights,

the entire evening replayed again,

it played like a movie,

I saw Logan's red face,

his eyes were completely wild,

the shattered picture frame lay,

shattered on the hardwood floor,

the glass was broken completely,

my own voice snapped back,

I had defended myself finally,

I had refused to hide,

then his heavy hand fisted,

he grabbed my cotton hoodie,

he drove me sideways hard,

straight into the hallway wall,

the family photos jumped up,

they rattled against the plaster,

I remembered the loud crack,

the sound of my skull,

hitting the wood and drywall,

I remembered dropping down,

falling hard to my knees,

mom screamed his name then,

she shrieked in absolute terror,

but not because I bled,

not because I was hurt,

she screamed because of him,

because he had done it,

because he had committed a crime,

something no one could excuse,

something no one could deny,

the doctor came in soon,

she wore clean navy scrubs,

her silver hair was long,

but pulled into a knot,

a very severe tight knot,

her badge read Dr. Reeves,

she looked at the wound,

she did not waste words,

she irrigated the open gash,

the water felt freezing cold,

then she injected the medicine,

the needle pierced my skin,

to numb the deep pain,

I flinched away from her,

my fingers clawed the sheet,

the paper tore under them,

you need steel staples,

she said very calmly,

mom tried to speak again,

she wanted to protect him,

doctor it was an accident,

my son is a good boy,

he would never do this,

Dr. Reeves looked up then,

she stopped her careful work,

she really looked at me,

she ignored my frantic mother,

she ignored the white chart,

she looked into my eyes,

there was something so steady,

in her quiet medical expression,

it made my throat tighten,

tears began to form there,

he didn't mean to do it,

mom whispered once more,

her voice was fading out,

please don't make this big,

don't ruin his bright future,

Dr. Reeves cleaned the blood,

the dark blood from my temple,

she met my trembling gaze,

we are not covering for him,

not this time at all,

she said those beautiful words,

my breath caught instantly,

I had not spoken yet,

I had not nodded once,

I had kept my secret,

but before I could move,

she stepped away from me,

she pulled the curtain open,

she called the nurse outside,

her voice was totally clear,

call hospital security right now,

and notify the local police,

this is domestic assault,

mom went pale as ice,

the room became deathly quiet,

the silence was so sharp,

it seemed to ring loudly,

then she turned to me,

she looked at my face,

she looked terrified of me,

she feared what was next,

the illusion was finally broken,

the truth was coming out,

the police were coming here,

to lock my brother away,

and nothing would save him,

not mom's frantic lies,

not his usual smooth excuses,

the nightmare was ending today,

and a new journey began,

fraught with fear and hope,

as the sirens grew closer,

wailing through the dark night,

echoing in the cold air,

bringing justice to our door,

and breaking our family forever,

leaving only the broken pieces,

of a life built on lies,

and the blood on my neck,

drying into a dark scar,

that would never fully heal,

I watched the door shake,

my heart hammered fast,

the shadows seemed long,

they crept across the floor,

mom clutched her purse tight,

her knuckles turned white,

she looked at the curtain,

expecting the worst to happen,

the air felt heavy,

it was impossible to breathe,

my vision blurred slightly,

from the exhaustion and pain,

but I felt a tiny spark,

a spark of true freedom,

igniting inside my chest,

for the first time ever,

the silence was heavy,

but it was necessary,

May you like

to break the chains,

of this terrible home.
