Chapter 5 - THE DRIVE INTO THE DARKNESS
The nurse brought me some water,
and a fresh clean hospital gown,
to replace my bloody cotton shirt,
the stiff brown collar was gone,
but the scent of old blood,
seemed to linger in my nose,
mom refused to talk to me,
she sat on her plastic chair,
staring at her smartphone screen,
waiting for a message from Logan,
or a call from the police station,
she was trying to find a lawyer,
someone who could save her son,
someone who could dismiss the charges,
the hours passed by very slowly,
the clock on the wall ticked,
each second felt like a drop,
of cold water on my skin,
around three o'clock in the morning,
a deputy entered the exam room,
he informed us that Logan was,
currently booked in the county jail,
he was charged with domestic battery,
and resisting a law officer,
the bond was set very high,
because of his violent behavior,
mom let out a low moan,
she looked at me with pure hatred,
are you happy now she asked,
you got what you wanted right,
I did not answer her question,
I just stood up from the table,
my legs felt weak and hollow,
but I managed to stay upright,
the doctor signed my release forms,
wishing me good luck quietly,
we walked out to the parking lot,
the night air was freezing cold,
the stars were hidden by clouds,
the world felt dark and empty,
mom unlocked the old sedan garage,
we got into the front seats,
the engine started with a rattle,
and we drove out into the night,
heading back to our broken home,
the drive was completely silent now,
no more excuses from her mouth,
no more begging for my silence,
only a cold heavy resentment,
that filled the small vehicle space,
making it hard to breathe easily,
I stared out the passenger window,
watching the streetlights flash past,
like yellow eyes in the dark,
wondering what would happen next,
when we opened the front door,
and faced the empty house together,

without the monster in the kitchen,
but with his ghost everywhere.
