Chapter 13 - THE TESTIMONY OF THE FRIGHTENED NOTARY
Before the defense could rest its case entirely,
the prosecution introduced a surprise witness whose testimony would seal the fate of the conspirators once and for all.
The heavy wooden doors at the back of the courtroom swung open,
and a frail,
elderly man walked slowly down the center aisle,
supported by a federal marshal.
It was Thomas Miller,
the licensed notary who had supposedly notarized my father's fraudulent estate waiver in a Midtown basement.
Victoria’s head snapped up instantly,
her eyes widening in horror as she recognized the old man she thought she had successfully paid off and silenced.
"State your name and occupation for the record,"
the federal prosecutor instructed gently as the notary took his seat in the witness box.
"My name is Thomas Miller,"
the old man whispered,
his voice trembling slightly into the microphone.
"I am a retired legal notary public."
"Mr. Miller,"
the prosecutor continued,
walking slowly toward the witness stand,
"did you notarize the document titled 'Surrender of Inheritance Rights' presented by Victoria Sterling?"
"No,
sir,"
Miller answered clearly,
pointing a shaking finger directly across the room at my mother.
"I was forced at gunpoint by Richard Sterling in a basement parking garage to sign my name and affix my official seal to a blank document."
A chaotic wave of murmurs erupted through the courtroom gallery,
prompting Chief Judge Eleanor Vance to bang her gavel repeatedly.
"Order!
Order in the court or I will clear the gallery!"
Judge Vance warned sternly.
The prosecutor turned toward the judge with a triumphant expression.
"The prosecution offers this sworn testimony as conclusive proof of forgery,
coercion,
and premeditated conspiracy."
Victoria slumped back in her chair,
her public defender burying his face in his hands as he realized there was no legal defense left to offer.
I watched my mother from the front row,
feeling neither joy nor anger,
