Chapter 23 - The Meeting

|

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of crystal chandeliers, flowing silk, and quiet, expensive conversations. It was the exact kind of room Mara had spent her entire marriage navigating while silently suffocating. She wore a sharp, tailored black suit that made her look more like an executioner than a socialite.

She moved through the crowd with absolute purpose. No one stopped her; her posture radiated a quiet, terrifying authority that parted the sea of wealthy donors.

Arthur Vance stood near the podium, holding a glass of champagne. He was in his late fifties, with silver hair and the polished, flawless smile of a man who believed he owned the world. When he saw Mara approaching, the smile tightened slightly, but he did not retreat.

"Mara Mercer," Vance said as she stopped before him. "I admit, I am surprised to see you here. I heard you prefer the gritty charm of your downtown project these days."

"I go where the work requires me," Mara said quietly, her voice carrying only far enough for him to hear. "I met your messenger last night in the alley."

"I have no idea what you are talking about," Vance lied smoothly, taking a sip of his champagne.

"You told Sarah Jenkins that her son was sick," Mara continued, ignoring his deflection. "You forged a medical report to bypass the family court protocols, and you locked a terrified child in one of your facilities to milk the state subsidies. You are a thief, Arthur."

Vance’s eyes hardened, dropping the charming facade. "You have no proof of anything, Mrs. Mercer. You are a grieving, traumatized woman projecting your past onto my legitimate medical network. If you make a scene here, I will have you removed and sued for defamation."

"I don't need to make a scene," Mara whispered, leaning in slightly. "I just needed to look you in the eye so you would know exactly who is tearing your network down. You have twenty-four hours to release Sarah's son back to her custody. If you don't, I am handing the GPS coordinates of your Red Hook server farm to the FBI."

Vance completely froze, the champagne glass halting midway to his mouth. The mention of Red Hook struck him like a physical blow.

Mara did not wait for his response. She turned and walked out of the ballroom, leaving the billionaire suffocating in his own sudden panic.
