Chapter 34 - The Smartwatch

|

The party eventually wound down, the guests departing with warm hugs and promises to meet again soon. The house grew quiet, filled only with the peaceful, rhythmic breathing of Rose and Iris, who had fallen asleep together in their shared bedroom.

Mara sat alone at her kitchen island, the soft glow of the overhead pendant lights illuminating the smooth granite counter. She unclasped the metal band of the smartwatch from her wrist and set it carefully on the table.

For two years, the watch had been her absolute anchor. It bore the burn marks from the ballroom floor, a physical testament to the night she had sent the SOS that saved her life. She had worn it every single day, a constant reminder to stay vigilant, to never allow herself to be vulnerable to the dark again.

Naomi walked into the kitchen, carrying two empty plates from the patio. She stopped when she saw the watch resting on the counter.

"You took it off," Naomi observed quietly, setting the plates in the sink.

"I did," Mara said, tracing the cracked edge of the screen with her finger.

"Is it broken?"

"No. It still works perfectly," Mara said, looking up at her friend. "But I realized today that I don't need it to remind me that I survived anymore. I don't need to carry the physical weight of that night on my body to remember that I am strong."

Naomi walked over and placed a comforting hand on Mara’s shoulder. "Healing doesn't mean forgetting, Mara. It just means the memory no longer has the power to hurt you."

Mara nodded, a profound, overwhelming sense of absolute peace settling deep into her chest. She picked up the heavy, burned smartwatch, walked over to a small, wooden memory box on the bookshelf, and placed the watch gently inside, closing the lid.

She turned back to the kitchen, feeling lighter than she had in years. The armor was finally off. She didn't need to fight a war tomorrow. She just needed to live.
