Chapter 35 - The Open Door

|

The next morning broke with brilliant, warm sunlight streaming through the large windows of the house. Mara woke up to the sound of soft, rapid footsteps padding down the hallway.

She smiled, pushing the covers aside just as Rose and Iris burst into her bedroom, their faces glowing with immense, unrestrained joy.

"Mommy! Pancakes!" Rose demanded, climbing onto the edge of the bed.

"Pancakes!" Iris echoed loudly, scrambling up right behind her sister, her small hands pulling at Mara’s sleeve.

Mara laughed, a deep, genuine sound that filled the entire room. She scooped both girls into her arms, pulling them into a massive, tangled hug. They were safe. They were healthy. They were entirely, unequivocally hers.

"Okay, okay, pancakes it is," Mara conceded, kissing the tops of their heads.

She carried them down the stairs and into the bright kitchen. As she mixed the batter, she looked out the window at the sprawling backyard. The world outside was no longer a terrifying place filled with hidden threats and insurmountable power. It was just a world. A world with beautiful days and rainy days, with challenges she was fully equipped to handle, and with a fiercely loyal community standing firmly beside her.

Vivian’s empire was dust. Vance’s network was shattered. The terrifying legacy of the Whitmore family had been completely, permanently rewritten by a mother who simply refused to be erased.

Mara set the plates of warm pancakes on the table, watching her daughters eagerly dig in. She walked over to the front door to grab the morning paper. She unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the heavy wooden door open, letting the fresh, crisp morning air rush into the house.

She did not close it.

She left the door standing wide open, the sunlight washing completely over the threshold. For the first time in her entire life, Mara Mercer looked out at the horizon and felt absolutely no fear of what might walk through. She was the guardian of this home, and the light belonged entirely to them.
