Chapter 29 - The Recovery

|

The drive to Connecticut was a silent, high-speed blur of flashing blue and red police lights. Ortiz drove the lead vehicle, cutting a path through the early morning traffic, with Mara sitting firmly in the passenger seat. Elena and Thomas followed closely behind in the Open Door SUV.

When they arrived at 445 Willow Creek Drive, it did not look like a hospital. It looked like an expensive, isolated country estate surrounded by high wrought-iron fences. The federal agents breached the front gates before the private security guards even had time to reach for their radios.

Mara walked through the grand front doors right behind Ortiz, ignoring the frantic, shouting administrators who were desperately trying to block their path.

"FBI! Everyone step away from the desks and keep your hands visible!" Ortiz roared, flashing her badge and her weapon.

Mara walked down the pristine, white hallway, her eyes scanning the room numbers. Dr. Aris’s file had indicated Leo was being held in the East Wing, isolation room four.

She reached the heavy wooden door and threw it open.

The room was small, containing only a bed and a single barred window. Huddled in the corner, clutching a thin white blanket to his chest, was a six-year-old boy. He looked terrified, exhausted, and incredibly small.

Mara immediately dropped to her knees, making herself as unthreatening as possible. She did not rush toward him. She remembered perfectly how it felt to be trapped in a room, waiting for the monster to return.

"Leo?" Mara asked, her voice impossibly gentle and soft.

The boy sniffled, looking at her with wide, fearful eyes. "Are you a doctor? I don't want any more medicine."

"I am not a doctor," Mara said, offering him a warm, reassuring smile. "My name is Mara. I am a friend of your mommy’s. She sent me to bring you home."

Leo’s lower lip trembled. "My mommy?"

"Yes," Mara said, reaching slowly into her pocket and pulling out a small, blue toy car that Sarah had given her during their first meeting. "She told me you forgot this in her purse. She said you need it for the drive back."

Leo looked at the toy car, recognizing his favorite possession. The absolute terror in his eyes finally broke, replaced by a desperate, overwhelming hope. He scrambled off the bed and ran across the room, throwing his small arms tightly around Mara’s neck.

Mara closed her eyes, wrapping her arms around the child, holding him completely safe. "I've got you, Leo. We're going home."
