Chapter 31 - The Fallout

The arrest of Arthur Vance dominated the national news cycle for three solid weeks. Unlike Vivian’s trial, which had been a localized scandal of the Whitmore elite, Vance’s exposure unraveled a massive, multi-state conspiracy involving corrupt judges, private medical boards, and incredibly wealthy families who had purchased stolen children.
Mara stood behind a podium at a crowded press conference held in the courtyard of the federal courthouse. Ortiz stood proudly to her right, and Naomi stood to her left, clutching a thick stack of finalized legal indictments.
"Arthur Vance believed that immense wealth could overwrite the fundamental truth of a mother's love," Mara spoke clearly into the bank of microphones, her voice echoing off the stone walls of the courthouse. "He weaponized the medical system, twisting the very institutions meant to protect our children into instruments of terror and profit."
A reporter in the second row raised his hand frantically. "Mrs. Mercer! Vance's defense team claims he was unaware of the forged documents and blames rogue doctors. How do you respond?"
Mara did not flinch. "We have the master ledgers from his secure server in Red Hook. We have his personal, encrypted emails ordering the exact removal of specific children. We have the routing numbers from Vanguard Holdings. Arthur Vance is not a victim of rogue employees; he was the architect of a nightmare. And today, that nightmare permanently ends."
Another reporter shouted, "What happens to the children who were already placed in closed adoptions?"
"The Open Door Project, in conjunction with federal authorities, has successfully located all forty-two children listed in Vance’s ledger," Mara answered, a fierce, protective pride blazing in her eyes. "Every single child is currently being legally returned to their rightful parents. The families are receiving fully funded trauma therapy, and the corrupt adoptions have been entirely voided."
As the press conference concluded, Mara walked away from the podium, leaving the reporters clamoring for more. She stepped into the quiet hallway of the courthouse where Ortiz was waiting.

"You gave them a hell of a soundbite," Ortiz smiled, crossing her arms.
"I gave them a warning," Mara corrected softly. "So the next Arthur Vance knows exactly what happens when they try to build a house in the dark."
