Chapter 33 - A Conversation with Celeste

|

Later in the afternoon, as the sun began to dip below the tree line and cast long, golden shadows across the lawn, Celeste arrived at the backyard gathering. She carried a large, brightly wrapped present for the twins and a tray of homemade desserts.

She walked over to Mara, who was sitting on a wooden bench watching the girls play with a pile of colorful balloons. The relationship between the two women had evolved from a tense, fragile truce into something resembling genuine sisterhood. The shared trauma of Vivian’s tyranny had eventually forged an unbreakable bond.

"The girls look absolutely beautiful, Mara," Celeste said, sitting down beside her. "Iris has gotten so tall."

"She refuses to stop climbing the furniture," Mara laughed softly. "I spend half my day catching her before she jumps off the sofa."

Celeste smiled, but a quiet, thoughtful expression settled over her features. "Mara, I wanted to tell you something before I officially announce it next week. I am leaving the city. I am moving to Chicago."

Mara turned, surprised. "Chicago? Why?"

"I am opening a foundation of my own," Celeste explained, her eyes clear and filled with absolute purpose. "It’s a specialized transitional housing program for women leaving abusive marriages who have been financially completely isolated. I am funding it entirely with the remaining trust money I inherited from my father."

Mara looked at her former sister-in-law, profoundly moved by the transformation. The woman who had once stood silently by while Vivian ruled with an iron fist was now dedicating her wealth to entirely dismantling the very systems of control she had grown up in.

"That is incredible, Celeste," Mara said, reaching out to squeeze her hand warmly. "You are going to help so many people."

"I learned from the best," Celeste said, her voice thick with emotion. "You showed me that we are not defined by the terrible things our family did. We are defined by the doors we choose to open afterward. Thank you, Mara. For not giving up on me."

"We don't leave people behind in the dark," Mara promised.
