Chapter 10 - THE WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING

The air inside the master library was so charged with tension that a single stray spark could have ignited the entire room. Dean Foster stood near the center of the Persian rug, his silk bathrobe rustling softly as he shifted his weight. His dark eyes flicked back and forth between Massimo Rinaldi and Carla Bennett like a predator measuring two trapped rabbits.
"Paranoia, boss?" Dean chuckled, a smooth, manufactured sound that lacked any real warmth. He took another slow sip of his bourbon, his gaze lingering on Carla’s rigid posture. "I wouldn't call it paranoia. I’d call it executive vigilance. After all, running an empire like the Rinaldi family requires round-the-clock attention. Especially when things are... fragile."
Massimo didn't flinch. His cold gray eyes remained locked on Dean, radiating an aura of absolute command that had kept him at the top of the criminal underworld for over a decade. He adjusted the heavy woolen blanket over his knees with slow, deliberate movements.
"My health is my concern, Dean," Massimo said, his voice dropping into a register that sent a shiver down Carla’s spine. "And the internal management of this estate is mine as well. If I require the head housekeeper to review inventory logs at midnight, that is my prerogative. You overstep your bounds."
For a fraction of a second, a flash of genuine hostility crossed Dean’s face, breaking through his polished veneer. But it vanished as quickly as it appeared, replaced by his trademark submissive smirk.
"Of course, boss. You're entirely right," Dean conceded smoothly, though his eyes remained as cold as winter stone. He turned his attention back to Carla, stepping slightly closer to her. "It’s just that Carla here has a habit of wandering into places she doesn't belong. Isn't that right, Carla? The administrative wing can be terribly confusing at night."
Carla kept her eyes respectfully lowered toward the floor, channeling every ounce of her maternal survival instinct into maintaining her composure. "Yes, Mr. Foster. I took a wrong turn while checking the linen schedules. Mr. Rinaldi was kind enough to set me straight."
Dean studied her for another agonizing moment, weighing her words. He could easily pull his concealed sidearm right now and end them both, staging it as a tragic break-in or a domestic dispute. But doing so would raise too many questions among the remaining syndicate captains who still viewed Massimo as an untouchable icon.
"Very well," Dean said smoothly, stepping back. "Make sure you find your way back to the quarters, Carla. It’s dangerous for little girls to be wandering around dark hallways alone. After all, accidents happen all the time on estates this size."
The veiled threat hung heavy in the air.
"She's dismissed, Dean," Massimo interrupted, his voice cutting like a butcher's knife. "Leave us."
Dean offered a mock salute with his crystal glass, turned on his heel, and walked out of the library, the heavy oak doors clicking shut behind him with a finality that echoed like a gunshot.
As soon as the footsteps faded down the corridor, Carla let out a shaky breath, her knees finally giving way as she leaned against the edge of the mahogany desk. "My God... he suspects everything."
"He suspects, but he doesn't know," Massimo corrected her, his gray eyes flashing with cold determination. He reached out and tapped the antique skeleton key resting on the blotter. "Which gives us a narrow window of opportunity. Tomorrow night, while Dean is attending the port authority gala in Manhattan, you will use this key to enter his third-floor office. You will retrieve the master digital backup drive from his wall safe."

Carla looked at the key, then up at Massimo. "And what about you, Mr. Rinaldi? What will you be doing while I'm breaking into his office?"
Massimo’s lips curled into a dangerous, confident smile. "I'll be preparing my own resurrection."
