Chapter 13 - THE RECKONING

-2-

The silence in the third-floor archives room was so absolute that the buzzing of the fluorescent lights overhead sounded like a swarm of angry hornets. Dean Foster slowly released his grip on Carla’s wrist, stepping back half a step as his eyes remained locked on the dark barrel of the Beretta 9mm pistol in Massimo Rinaldi’s hand.

Carla stumbled backward, clutching her bruised wrist, and quickly scrambled out of the crossfire toward the safety of the filing cabinets.

"How?" Dean whispered, his voice losing its confident swagger, replaced by the frantic calculations of a cornered rat. "The neuro-paralytic compound was administered daily by Dr. Hale. Your metabolic functions should have been completely suppressed."

Massimo let out a cold, humorless chuckle, rolling his wheelchair another two feet forward to close the distance. "Do you really think I didn't notice the strange taste in my evening bourbon after the first month, Dean? Do you think a man who built this syndicate on suspicion and blood wouldn't have his personal food and medicine tested by an independent underground clinic in Zurich?"

Dean swallowed hard, his throat dry. "You... you knew?"

"I knew something was poisoning me," Massimo said, his voice dropping into a register of pure, unadulterated ice. "I simply played your game. I let you think your little chemical prison was working. I let you believe you had successfully stolen my empire out from under me, all so you would step out of the shadows and show me every single rat involved in your little coup."

Panic flickered in Dean’s dark eyes. He cast a desperate glance toward the open window behind the desk, measuring the drop to the stone courtyard three stories below. "Massimo, wait. Let's talk about this. We're brothers. We built this empire together. We can split the ports 50-50—"

"We aren't brothers, Dean," Massimo interrupted, his gray eyes narrowing. "You're a traitor who shot me in the back on Brooklyn Avenue, took credit for saving my life, and tried to murder an innocent mother and child to cover your tracks."

Before Dean could lunge toward the desk to grab a hidden firearm, Massimo’s finger tightened on the trigger.

Bang.

The deafening roar of the gunshot echoed off the archive walls like thunder. A round punched cleanly through the hardwood floor just one inch away from Dean’s oxblood shoe, splintering the polished timber and sending a cloud of dust into the air.

"Move another inch, Dean, and the next bullet won't miss your kneecap," Massimo warned, his voice dead steady.

At that exact moment, heavy footsteps thundered up the third-floor stairwell. The double doors swung open wide, revealing three heavily armed loyal capos from the Brooklyn and Queens factions, led by Rocco, the veteran enforcer who had served the Rinaldi family for thirty years.

Rocco took one look at Massimo sitting upright with a gun in his hand, and then at Dean cowering against the filing cabinets. A grim, satisfied grin spread across the enforcer's weathered face.

"Looks like we missed the party, Boss," Rocco said, stepping into the room with his service weapon drawn. He glanced at Dean. "Shall we take care of the trash now?"

"Not yet, Rocco," Massimo said, rolling his wheelchair forward until he stopped right in front of the trembling traitor. He looked down at Dean with an expression of profound, crushing disappointment. "Handcuff him. Lock him in the basement holding cells. Tomorrow morning, we're calling a full meeting of the syndicate board. Every capobregima, every regional boss, every associate."

"And Dr. Hale?" Rocco asked, clicking heavy steel handcuffs onto Dean’s wrists with brutal efficiency.

"Round him up before his flight to Chicago lands," Massimo commanded coldly. "Nobody leaves the family."

As Rocco and his men hauled a struggling, cursing Dean out of the room, silence settled once more over the archives.

Massimo turned his wheelchair around, looking at Carla, who stood near the door, shaking from the adrenaline crash.

"You did well tonight, Carla," Massimo said softly, his voice losing its icy edge. "You saved my life."

May you like

Carla let out a long, shaky breath, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. "I just wanted to keep my daughter safe, Mr. Rinaldi."

"And you did," Massimo replied, staring out the window toward the moonlit lawns of Long Island. "Now... it's time to take our home back."
