Chapter 7 - THE FOX IN THE HENHOUSE

Carla’s heart plummeted into her stomach, the blood rushing in her ears like a roaring waterfall. She stood frozen in the center of the linen closet, clutching her phone so tightly her knuckles turned white.
Dean Foster didn't move immediately. He remained leaning against the doorframe, his dark eyes sweeping over her with a slow, predatory curiosity. The polite, brotherly facade he wore around Massimo was completely gone, replaced by the chilling aura of a man who ruled an empire through blood and intimidation.
"You're working hard today, Carla," Dean said softly, his voice smooth as silk, carrying an underlying menace that made the air in the small room feel suffocating. "The linens are always spotless, yet here you are, deep in the administrative wing long after your shift in the kitchens has ended."
Carla forced herself to swallow the lump of panic blocking her throat. She lowered her eyes instantly, reverting to the submissive posture of the humble housekeeper she was expected to be.
"I... I was just checking the inventory of the guest towels, Mr. Foster," Carla replied, her voice trembling only slightly, a masterclass in controlled fear. "The winter batch is coming in, and Mrs. Rinaldi requested extra silk pillowcases for the master suite."
Dean chuckled, a low, humorless sound that sent a shiver down her spine. He pushed off the doorframe and took two slow steps into the closet, closing the distance between them until Carla could smell the expensive cologne and faint bourbon on his breath.
"Silk pillowcases," Dean repeated, tasting the words as if they were poison. He stopped just inches away from her, towering over her petite frame. "Odd place to check linen inventory, Carla. The storage lockers are on the opposite side of the east wing. This is the private administrative corridor."
Carla kept her gaze firmly fixed on the polished buttons of Dean’s tailored vest, her mind racing desperately for an escape route. "I took a wrong turn while looking for the master housekeeper's logbook, sir. I'll head back to the kitchens immediately."
She tried to step past him, but Dean’s arm shot out like a steel bar, bracing against the wooden shelf right beside her head, effectively blocking her exit.
"Hold on a second, Carla," Dean murmured, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You're a smart woman. Everyone knows that. You raised that little girl of yours all by yourself after your husband died. You've got survival instincts. Which means you know that curiosity in a house like this can be a very fatal character trait."
Carla’s breath hitched. She knew he wasn't just talking about her being in the wrong hallway. He knew something else.
"I don't know what you mean, Mr. Foster," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Dean tilted his head, his dark eyes narrowing as he studied her face for any sign of deception. For a tense, agonizing moment, neither of them moved. The silence in the closet was deafening, broken only by the faint ticking of the grandfather clock down the hall.
Then, abruptly, Dean lowered his arm. The terrifying tension in the air dissipated as quickly as it had arisen, replaced once again by his slick, charming persona.
"Just a friendly reminder, Carla," Dean said, patting the shelf lightly with his fingertips. "In this house, people who see things they aren't supposed to see tend to have very short life expectancies. Go back to your kitchen. Make sure Nina stays out of trouble. And let the grown-ups handle the business of the Rinaldi family."
Without waiting for a reply, Dean turned on his heel and walked calmly down the hallway, his footsteps fading into the distance.
Carla collapsed back against the shelving unit, her legs finally giving out. She slid down to the floor, pulling her knees to her chest as silent, hot tears of terror streamed down her face. She pulled the locket from her neck, opening it to look at the tiny white pill resting inside.
She had underestimated the danger. Dean Foster wasn't just Massimo's right-hand man; he was a cold-blooded monster who would kill a child without a second thought if he suspected she held the key to his destruction.
We have to leave, Carla told herself with fierce determination, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. Tonight. As soon as the sun goes down.

Little did she know, escaping the Rinaldi estate wasn't as simple as walking out the front gates. The estate was locked down tighter than a maximum-security prison, and Dean Foster had eyes and ears everywhere.
Meanwhile, back in the master library, Massimo Rinaldi sat alone with the Newark shipping manifests spread across his heavy mahogany desk. His gray eyes were cold, calculating, and ablaze with a newfound clarity. He had the weapon, he had the motive, and soon, he would have his revenge.
