Chapter 8 - THE MIDNIGHT ESCAPE PLAN

-2-
The autumn moon hung low and heavy in the night sky, casting a silvery, ethereal glow across the sprawling rooftops of the Rinaldi estate. Inside the small servants' quarters at the back of the mansion, the air was tense and quiet.
Carla Bennett moved through her modest bedroom like a ghost, packing a single canvas duffel bag with a few changes of clothes, all of her hard-earned savings hidden inside an old sock, and her late husband’s passport. In the center of the small bed, three-year-old Nina was fast asleep, clutching her stuffed rabbit tightly against her chest, completely unaware that her world was about to be turned upside down.
Carla paused, zipping the duffel bag closed with trembling hands. Her mind raced with terrifying scenarios. If she tried to walk out the front gates, the perimeter guards—all loyal mercenaries on Dean Foster’s payroll—would stop her immediately. If she called a taxi, the dispatcher was routed through the local town committee, which was heavily influenced by the Rinaldi syndicate.
There was only one person in this entire estate who had the power to help her slip past Dean Foster’s net without raising an alarm.
Massimo Rinaldi.
She knew the risks. Approaching the crime boss at midnight in the master wing was dangerous. But Massimo wasn't Dean. Despite his ruthless reputation in the underworld, Massimo had always treated her with a strange, quiet respect, and his fondness for Nina was genuine. More importantly, Massimo now had every reason in the world to want Dean Foster destroyed.
Carla looked down at her sleeping daughter, kissed her forehead gently, and whispered, "Stay here, sweet girl. Mommy will be right back."
She slipped out of the room into the dark, silent corridor. The mansion at night was a labyrinth of shadows and whispered secrets. She navigated the hallways with practiced stealth, avoiding the main security checkpoints by utilizing the old service stairwells used by the household staff for decades.
Minutes later, she reached the heavy oak doors of the master library.
To her surprise, the door was slightly ajar, a warm amber glow spilling out onto the polished marble floor. She took a deep breath, stepped forward, and pushed the door open.
Massimo Rinaldi sat at his mahogany desk. He wasn't in his wheelchair; instead, he had managed with incredible physical effort to transfer himself into a heavy leather wingback armchair by the fireplace. A bottle of bourbon sat half-empty on the table beside him, and the stark outlines of his paralyzed legs were covered by a heavy woolen blanket.
He looked up as the door creaked open, his cold gray eyes locking onto Carla with piercing intensity.
"Carla," Massimo said, his voice deep and steady, devoid of surprise. "What is a trusted housekeeper doing wandering the halls of the master wing at one in the morning?"
Carla closed the door behind her with a soft click, locking it mechanically. She crossed the room, stopping a few feet away from his desk. Without a word, she reached into her pocket, pulled out the small locket, and opened it, laying it flat on the mahogany surface right in front of him.
Massimo looked down at the tiny white pill resting inside the locket. His sharp brow furrowed. "What is this?"
"That," Carla whispered, her voice trembling with emotion, "is the pill Dr. Hale dropped in this very room yesterday afternoon. Nina picked it up off the crimson carpet."
Massimo’s gaze snapped from the pill back up to Carla’s face. A heavy, suffocating silence descended upon the library as the implications of her words settled into the space between them.
"Go on," Massimo commanded quietly.
"I ran the alphanumeric code through an advanced medical database last night," Carla continued, her courage mounting out of sheer desperation. "It’s not a painkiller, Mr. Rinaldi. It’s a synthetic neuro-paralytic blocking agent. It’s what’s keeping your nervous system suppressed. It’s what’s keeping you in that chair."
The fire crackled softly in the hearth, casting dancing orange shadows across Massimo’s chiseled face. For a long moment, he didn't speak. He simply stared at the pill, and then a slow, terrible smile touched the corners of his mouth—a smile born of absolute, chilling realization.
"Dean and Hale," Massimo murmured, his voice laced with venomous clarity. "The ambush, the rescue, the daily medical treatments... it was all a cage."
"Yes," Carla pleaded, stepping closer. "And Dean knows I found it. He cornered me in the linen closet today. If we stay here, Mr. Rinaldi, he will kill us. We need your help to get out of the estate."

Massimo looked up, his gray eyes burning with a fierce, terrifying resolve that proved the great crime boss was far from broken.
"Run away, Carla?" Massimo said softly, shaking his head. "No. We aren't going to run. We are going to strike back. And you and Nina are going to help me reclaim my empire."
