Chapter 9 - ALLIES IN THE DARK

The amber firelight flickered across the walls of the master library, casting long, dramatic shadows that danced around Massimo Rinaldi and Carla Bennett. For several minutes, the only sound in the room was the crackling of dry oak logs in the hearth.
Massimo stared at the small white pill resting inside Carla’s locket, his mind calculating every variable with the cold precision of a grandmaster surveying a chessboard. The trap had been set by a master architect, but the architect had made one fatal miscalculation: he had underestimated the observational skills of a three-year-old child and the quiet desperation of a mother protecting her cub.
"You understand what happens if we fail, Carla?" Massimo asked, his deep voice cutting through the silence like a razor blade. He lifted his head, his cold gray eyes locking onto hers with unyielding intensity. "Dean Foster is not a man who leaves loose ends. If he discovers you brought this evidence to me, he won't just fire you. He will ensure you and your daughter vanish without a trace."
Carla swallowed hard, her hands trembling slightly, but her brown eyes met his gaze without flinching. She hadn't survived the harsh realities of the working class and the sudden loss of her husband by being weak. "I already know the risks, Mr. Rinaldi. Dean cornered me in the linen closet today. He’s already suspicious. Staying here and doing nothing is a death sentence for Nina and me. If helping you is our only way out of this hellhole, then tell me what you need me to do."
Massimo offered a grim, approving nod. "Good. Because I cannot move freely through the mansion without alerting Dean’s personal guards. I need eyes and ears in places my wheelchair cannot reach."
"What kind of places?" Carla asked, stepping closer to the desk.
"The executive safe in Dean’s private office on the third floor," Massimo said, leaning forward in his armchair. "That's where he keeps the physical backup drives for the offshore wire transfers, the signed contracts with the Chicago board members, and the operational logs from the Brooklyn Avenue ambush. If we present those files to the loyal capos in the outer boroughs before Friday’s final buyout, Dean’s entire syndicate of traitors will collapse overnight."
Carla’s breath hitched. "The third-floor office? Dean keeps that room locked with a biometric scanner. Only he and his personal secretary have access."
"Normally, yes," Massimo replied smoothly. "Which is why we aren't going to break the door down. We are going to use the oldest trick in the book." He reached into his vest pocket and produced a small, master skeleton key—an antique artifact left over from the estate's original construction that bypassed the electronic deadbolt entirely, leaving the manual latch intact. "The key opens the side service door leading directly into the archives room behind his office. But someone small, quiet, and unnoticed needs to slip inside to retrieve the master ledger from his desk drawer."
Carla stared at the key on the desk, a wave of profound realization washing over her. "You want me to go into his office."
"I do," Massimo said firmly. "And while you retrieve the ledger, I will coordinate with my remaining loyal loyalists outside the estate—men who still believe in the Rinaldi name, men who think I'm dead or dying."
Before Carla could answer, a sharp, metallic sound echoed from down the hallway outside the library doors.
Clack.
It was the distinct sound of heavy footsteps approaching the master wing at an ungodly hour of the night.
Panic flared in Carla’s chest. "Someone's coming!"
Without missing a beat, Massimo’s survival instincts kicked in. With a swift, practiced heave of his powerful upper body, he grabbed the wheels of his secondary chair, rolled himself back across the room, and locked himself into position by the desk, throwing a heavy woolen blanket over his legs just as the library doors swung open.
Stepping into the room, holding a crystal glass of amber bourbon and wearing a silk bathrobe loosely tied around his waist, was Dean Foster.
Dean’s dark eyes swept over the room, instantly noting Carla standing beside the desk and Massimo sitting rigidly in his wheelchair. A slow, suspicious smile crept across Dean’s face.
"Well, well," Dean drawled, taking a slow sip of his drink as he closed the distance between them. "Late-night administrative meetings between the boss and the head housekeeper. How very industrious of you both."
Massimo’s face remained a mask of absolute, chilling granite. He didn't blink, and his voice carried the crushing weight of a mafia boss addressing an insubordinate underling.

"Carla was just finishing her evening duties, Dean," Massimo said smoothly, his tone laced with icy authority. "Is there a reason you're wandering the halls at two in the morning, or has your paranoia finally started keeping you awake?"
Dean stopped a few feet away, his dark eyes narrowing as he looked from Massimo to the pale, terrified housekeeper standing beside him. The air in the library grew thick with unspoken menace, setting the stage for a deadly game of cat and mouse.
