Chapter 12 - THE TRAP IS SPRUNG

The fluorescent lights of the third-floor archives room buzzed overhead, casting a harsh, clinical glare over the rows of heavy oak filing cabinets. Carla Bennett stood frozen before the open wall safe, her fingers still clamped tightly around the handle of the black leather briefcase containing the master Rinaldi records.
Dean Foster took a slow, deliberate sip of his scotch, his dark eyes gleaming with malicious satisfaction. He strolled casually into the room, his polished oxblood shoes clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor.
"I have to hand it to you, Carla," Dean said, his voice dripping with condescension. "For a simple housekeeper, you've got an extraordinary amount of ambition. Sneaking into my private office, cracking my wall safe using the exact family passcode... you're practically auditioning for a role in an organized crime syndicate."
Carla’s mind raced in a desperate panic. She had fallen right into the lion's den. The gala in Manhattan had been nothing more than a carefully orchestrated decoy designed to draw out whoever was leaking information to Massimo.
"I... I was just looking for the extra guest linens, Mr. Foster," Carla stammered, her voice shaking despite her best efforts to maintain control. "I thought this was the secondary storage closet."
Dean let out a sharp, cruel laugh. He tossed his empty glass onto a nearby leather sofa, where it landed with a dull thud against the cushions. He closed the remaining distance between them in two long strides, his towering frame completely blocking the only exit from the room.
"Linen closet?" Dean sneered, his amiable facade completely stripped away, revealing the ruthless monster beneath. "Carla, let’s drop the amateur act. You know too much. You found Dr. Hale’s neuro-paralytic pill in the library, you ran a database search on your phone, and you crawled straight to Massimo like a loyal little soldier."
Carla swallowed hard, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Liar," Dean hissed, his hand shooting out to grab her wrist with crushing force, wrenching the black leather briefcase out of her grip and tossing it across the room. "You and that paralyzed boss of yours thought you could outsmart me? Massimo is a vegetable, chained to his wheelchair by my design, and you... you're just collateral damage."
Tears of frustration and terror welled in Carla’s eyes, but she refused to break. "You're a monster, Dean. What you did to Massimo... what you're doing to this family—it's going to come back to destroy you."
Dean’s face twisted into a mask of pure rage. He raised his free hand, his fingers curling into a heavy fist. "You talk too much, Carla. Just like your husband on that construction site—sometimes accidents happen when people don't know how to keep their mouths shut."
The construction site.
Carla’s eyes widened in horror. Her husband's fatal accident two years ago wasn't a random mishap—it bore Dean Foster’s fingerprints all over it.
Before Dean’s fist could connect with her face, a sharp, metallic sound echoed from the hallway outside.
Clack. Clack. Clack.
The rhythmic, mechanical whir of motorized rubber tires rolling swiftly across the hardwood floor.
Dean paused, his head snapping toward the open doorway of the archives room.
The shadows in the hallway parted, and rolling out from the darkness into the harsh fluorescent light was Massimo Rinaldi.
He wasn't slumped in his wheelchair. He sat upright, his shoulders squared, his cold gray eyes blazing with an incandescent fury that made the blood run cold. In his right hand, gripped with absolute, unyielding steadiness, was a heavy Beretta 9mm semi-automatic pistol, aimed squarely at Dean Foster’s chest.
"Let her go, Dean," Massimo’s voice echoed through the room, deep, steady, and carrying the absolute authority of a king reclaiming his throne.
Dean froze, his hand still clamped around Carla’s wrist. For the first time in six months, color drained entirely from Dean’s face as he looked down the barrel of the gun and straight into the eyes of the man he thought he had chemically lobotomized.

"Massimo..." Dean whispered, a cold sweat breaking out across his forehead. "You... you should be paralyzed. The dosage should have kept you in that chair for months."
"You forgot one crucial detail about the Rinaldi family, Dean," Massimo replied, a terrifying smile touching his lips as he cocked the pistol with a sharp, metallic click. "We never trust anyone completely—not even our most trusted friends."
