Chapter 5 - THE BREAKFAST TABLE CONFRONTATION

-2-
The tension inside the Rinaldi dining hall was thick enough to cut with a butcher's knife, though to an outside observer, it appeared to be nothing more than a routine morning briefing between a powerful crime boss and his trusted right-hand man.
Camille Ashwood entered the room a moment later, her silk designer robe rustling softly against the marble floor. She smelled of expensive French perfume and expensive tastes. She walked directly behind Massimo’s wheelchair, leaning down to plant a cold, calculated kiss on his cheek.
"Morning, darling," Camille murmured, her tone devoid of any genuine warmth. She pulled out the chair directly to Massimo's left and sat down, immediately pouring herself a cup of black coffee. "Have you finalized the guest list for the wedding yet? The caterers from Manhattan are calling every hour demanding final confirmation. If we don't lock down the dates soon, the venue in the Hamptons will be booked by someone else."
Massimo turned his head slightly, his cold gray eyes locking onto Camille’s face. For the first time, he looked at her not as a future wife, but as another piece of the intricate puzzle Dean had constructed around him. Camille had been introduced to him by Dean two years ago. Their engagement had been fast, convenient, and heavily promoted by Dean as a way to "stabilize the family's public image."
"The wedding can wait, Camille," Massimo said, his voice level, carrying a weight that forced her to pause her coffee cup halfway to her lips.
Camille blinked in surprise, a flicker of irritation crossing her sharply contoured features. "Wait? Massimo, we've pushed the date back twice already. People are starting to talk. They're saying the great Massimo Rinaldi is too weak, too broken to even walk down the aisle."
"Let them talk," Massimo replied coldly, his gaze never wavering. "A wedding requires a groom who is fully present. Until my health is completely restored, everything else is secondary."
Dean lowered his newspaper, his eyes narrowing slightly as he observed the exchange. A subtle shift occurred in the air around him, a momentary dropping of the mask where the polite, loyal second-in-command vanished, replaced by a calculating predator evaluating a rebellious asset.
"Easy, Camille," Dean intervened smoothly, flashing a reassuring smile toward her before turning his attention to Massimo. "Massimo is right to be cautious. Your health is our number one priority, boss. In fact, Dr. Hale is scheduled for his morning checkup in an hour. We can have him run a full panel of blood tests if you're feeling uncertain about your physical progress."
Blood tests.
The words hung in the air like a veiled threat. Massimo knew exactly what kind of blood tests Dr. Hale would run—tests designed to confirm that the paralytic agents were still at optimal saturation levels in his bloodstream.
"No blood tests today, Dean," Massimo said, his tone flat and unyielding. "I'm tired of being poked and prodded by specialists who tell me what I can and cannot do. Today, I want to review the shipping manifests from the Port of Newark. Privately. In my study."
Dean studied Massimo for a long, uncomfortable moment. The silence stretched across the dining table, heavy and charged with unspoken suspicion. Finally, Dean offered a smooth, placating shrug.
"As you wish, boss. The Newark files will be waiting on your desk by noon."
As breakfast concluded in a frosty silence, Carla entered the dining hall to clear away the used plates. Her movements were swift and efficient. As she reached for Massimo’s untouched coffee cup, her eyes met his for a fraction of a second.
In that fleeting glance, Massimo saw something in the housekeeper's eyes that he hadn't noticed before—a deep, quiet intelligence, and a hidden burden. He recognized the look of a woman trying desperately to protect someone she loved in a world far too dangerous for her to navigate.
"Carla," Massimo said softly, stopping her hand as she lifted the silver tray.
"Yes, Mr. Rinaldi?" she replied instantly, lowering her gaze to the floor in her customary display of deference.
"How is Nina doing this morning?" Massimo asked, his voice softening just a fraction.
A faint, genuine smile touched Carla’s lips. "She's well, sir. Playing with her toys upstairs. Thank you for asking."
"Make sure she stays out of the east wing today," Massimo instructed quietly, his gray eyes flashing with a dark, protective intensity that Carla couldn't quite decipher. "Things are going to get... complicated around here."
Carla frowned inwardly, feeling a cold shiver run down her spine. "I understand, sir. I'll keep her in the kitchen and the nursery."
May you like
She turned and hurried out of the room, her heart racing. Massimo Rinaldi wasn't just a paralyzed crime boss; he was a cornered wolf preparing to tear apart whatever trap had been set for him. And Carla knew, with a gut-wrenching certainty, that she and Nina were standing right in the path of the coming storm.
Upstairs in the nursery, completely unaware of the tense chess match playing out below, three-year-old Nina was humming a happy little tune as she lined up her plastic farm animals once more, her tiny hand occasionally brushing against the pocket of her dress where a forgotten white pill lay waiting to blow the Rinaldi empire sky-high.
