Chapter 13

Noah's second birthday was a celebration.
Not just of his life.
But of our family.
Of survival.
Of healing.
We had a big party in the backyard.
Sarah was there.
Ryan's dad was there.
Karen was there.
Detective Carter was there.
Our lawyer was there.
Dr. Maya was there.
Dr. Chen was there.
All the people who had supported us.
Who had helped us through the hardest time of our lives.
Lily helped plan the party.
She wanted a dinosaur theme.
Noah's favorite.
She made decorations.
She helped bake the cake.
She organized the games.
She was the best party planner a little brother could ask for.
Noah was adorable.
He was talking more and more every day.
Full of energy.
Full of life.
Full of love.
He ran around the backyard.
Chasing the other kids.
Laughing.
Screaming with joy.
It was hard to believe that this was the same baby who had been dropped onto the floor.
Who had been so scared and hurt.
He was thriving.
He was happy.
He was loved.
During the party, Ryan pulled me aside.
"Can I talk to you for a second?"
"Of course. What is it?"
He took my hand.
He looked nervous.
"Emily, we've been through so much together. We've survived things that would have destroyed most couples. And we came out stronger. Closer. More in love."
He knelt down.
My heart started racing.
"Emily Carter, will you marry me? Again?"
He pulled out a ring.
A beautiful diamond ring.
I started crying.
"Ryan..."
"I know we're already married," he said. "But I want to do it again. Properly. With our kids there. With our family and friends. As a celebration of us. Of everything we've overcome. Of everything we have."
I nodded.
Tears streaming down my face.
"Yes. Yes. A thousand times yes."
He slipped the ring onto my finger.
And he kissed me.
The people around us cheered.
Lily ran over.
"Did you say yes? Did you say yes?"
"I said yes, baby."
Lily jumped up and down.
"Yay! We're going to have a wedding! Can I be the flower girl?"
"You can be whatever you want, sweetheart."
Noah ran over too.
"Wedding?" he said. "Cake?"
We all laughed.
"Yes, Noah," Ryan said. "There will be cake."
The wedding was six months later.
Small.
Intimate.
Perfect.
We got married in the backyard of our new house.
Under the big oak tree.
Lily was the flower girl.
And the maid of honor.
She wore a beautiful purple dress.
She carried a bouquet of flowers.
She walked down the aisle before me.
Throwing rose petals.
Noah was the ring bearer.
He wore a tiny tuxedo.
He carried the rings on a pillow.
He walked down the aisle with Sarah.
And he only tried to eat the rings once.
It was perfect.
Our friends and family were there.
All the people who had supported us.
Who had loved us.
Who had helped us heal.
I walked down the aisle on Ryan's father's arm.
Ryan was waiting for me.
He looked handsome.
And happy.
And when he saw me, he cried.
The ceremony was short.
But meaningful.
We wrote our own vows.
Ryan went first.
"Emily, when I married you the first time, I thought I knew what love was. I thought I knew what commitment was. But I had no idea. I had no idea that we would go through hell. That we would face things that would test us in ways we never imagined. But I also had no idea that we would come out the other side stronger. Closer. More in love than I ever thought possible."
He paused.
Tears in his eyes.
"You are my rock. My best friend. The love of my life. You gave me two beautiful children. You gave me a reason to be a better man. I promise to love you. To protect you. To support you. To make you laugh. To hold you when you cry. For the rest of my life. I love you, Emily. Always."
Then it was my turn.
"Ryan, when I married you the first time, I thought I knew what I was getting into. I thought I knew your family. I thought I knew what our life would be like. But I had no idea. I had no idea that we would face such darkness. Such pain. Such fear. But I also had no idea that we would find such light. Such love. Such strength in each other."
I looked at Lily and Noah.
"You gave me a family. Not just by blood, but by choice. By love. By survival. Lily, you are the bravest girl I know. You taught me what courage really means. Noah, you are the light of my life. You taught me what unconditional love really is."
I looked back at Ryan.
"I promise to love you. To stand by you. To fight for you. To laugh with you. To cry with you. To build a life with you that is full of love and happiness and safety. For the rest of my life. I love you, Ryan. Always."
We exchanged rings.
We kissed.
And everyone cheered.
At the reception, Lily gave a speech.
She stood up in front of everyone.
Holding her glass of apple juice.
"I just want to say something," she said. "A few years ago, I was scared. I was scared of Grandma. I was scared that no one would believe me. I was scared that I would never feel safe. But then my mom and dad and Noah came into my life. And they loved me. And they protected me. And they made me feel safe. And now I have the best family ever. And I'm the happiest girl in the world. So thank you. For loving me. For being my family. Cheers!"
Everyone raised their glasses.
"Cheers!"
That night, after the party was over.
After the guests had gone home.
After the kids were asleep.
Ryan and I sat in the backyard.
Looking at the stars.
"Did you ever think we would be here?" I asked.
Ryan shook his head.
"No. After that day... after what she did... I thought our lives were over. I thought we would never be happy again. But I was wrong. We're here. We're happy. We have our family. And nothing can take that away from us."
I leaned my head on his shoulder.
"I love you, Ryan Carter."
May you like
"I love you too, Emily Carter."
And we were happy.
