Chapter 3

The police arrived at the hospital an hour later.

Two officers.

One man, one woman.

They were kind but professional.

We told them everything.

From the beginning.

How Diane had always been critical.

How she'd resented me from the moment Ryan and I started dating.

How she'd never approved of our parenting.

And then what happened that afternoon.

Lily told her story too.

She was brave.

So brave.

She showed them the video on her tablet.

The female officer's face hardened as she watched.

When it was over, she looked at Lily.

"You did a very brave thing, sweetheart," she said.

Lily nodded, but she looked scared.

"Is Grandma going to be in trouble?"

The officer knelt down.

"She made a very bad choice. And she needs to be held responsible for that. But none of this is your fault. You protected your cousin. That's what heroes do."

Lily smiled a small, tentative smile.

The officers took our statements.

They made copies of the video.

They told us they would go to Diane's house to question her.

And that a detective would be in touch.

When they left, Ryan called his sister, Sarah.

Lily's mom.

We needed to tell her what happened.

Sarah arrived at the hospital thirty minutes later.

She was frantic.

When she saw Lily, she pulled her into a tight hug.

"Are you okay, baby? Did she hurt you?"

Lily shook her head.

"I'm okay, Mom. But Grandma hurt Noah."

Sarah looked at us.

At Noah sleeping peacefully in my arms.

At Ryan's red, swollen eyes.

"Tell me everything," she said.

We did.

We showed her the video.

Sarah watched in silence.

When it ended, she was crying.

"I can't believe it," she whispered. "I knew she was difficult. But this... this is evil."

She looked at Lily.

"She said things to you? Mean things?"

Lily nodded.

"She said I was spoiled. That you were a bad mom."

Sarah's face crumpled.

"Oh, baby. Why didn't you tell me?"

Lily shrugged.

"She said if I told you, you'd be sad. And that you'd send me to live with her."

Sarah pulled her daughter closer.

"I would never do that. Never. You are my whole world."

She looked at Ryan and me.

"I'm so sorry. I had no idea she was saying those things to her."

"It's not your fault," Ryan said. "She's a master manipulator. She's been doing it our whole lives."

Sarah wiped her eyes.

"What happens now?"

"We're pressing charges," I said. "The police are going to question her. CPS is involved too."

Sarah nodded.

"Good. She needs to be stopped. Before she hurts someone else."

She looked at Lily.

"How would you feel about staying with Aunt Emily and Uncle Ryan for a little while? Until we figure everything out?"

Lily's face lit up.

"Really? Can I?"

I smiled.

"Of course you can. We'd love to have you."

Lily looked at Noah.

"I can help take care of him."

"You already have," Ryan said. "You helped protect him today."

We left the hospital a short time later.

Noah was asleep in his car seat.

His little hand wrapped around my finger.

Lily sat in the back beside him, watching him sleep.

When we got home, the house felt different.

Quieter.

But also safer.

Diane wasn't there.

And for the first time in a long time, I didn't feel like I was walking on eggshells.

Ryan called his father that night.

His dad lived in another state.

They'd been divorced from Diane for years.

When Ryan told him what happened, there was a long silence.

Then his father said, "I'm not surprised. She always had a mean streak. But I never thought she'd hurt a baby."

He promised to support us.

To be there for whatever we needed.

That night, we all slept in the master bedroom.

Lily on an air mattress on the floor.

Noah in his bassinet beside the bed.

Ryan and me holding each other.

But I couldn't sleep.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw it again.

Diane opening her arms.

Noah falling.

The sound of his scream.

I got up and went to the bassinet.

Noah was sleeping peacefully.

His little chest rising and falling.

I reached in and touched his soft cheek.

He stirred slightly but didn't wake up.

"He's okay," Ryan whispered from behind me.

He put his arms around my waist.

"He's okay," I repeated. "But what if she comes back? What if she tries to hurt him again?"

Ryan held me tighter.

"She's not going to hurt anyone again. I promise you. The police are handling it. And we're going to get a restraining order. She'll never be allowed near any of us again."

I leaned back against him.

"I'm scared, Ryan. What if the video isn't enough? What if she finds a way to twist this?"

"She can't twist video evidence, Emily. And Lily is a witness. She saw everything. And she was brave enough to speak up."

I thought about Lily.

That brave ten-year-old girl who had been so scared but still told the truth.

"She's amazing," I said.

"She is," Ryan agreed. "And she's been through a lot with my mother. Maybe more than we realized."

"We're going to help her," I said. "Whatever she needs."

"We are," Ryan said. "We're going to be the family she deserves. All of us."

He kissed the top of my head.

"Let's try to get some sleep. Tomorrow is going to be a long day."

I nodded.

But I knew sleep wouldn't come easily.

Not when my world had been turned upside down.

Not when the woman who was supposed to be family had tried to hurt my baby.

But as I looked at Noah sleeping peacefully.

And at Lily curled up on the air mattress.

And felt Ryan's arms around me.

I knew one thing.

May you like

We were going to get through this.

Together.
