Chapter 4

The next morning started with a phone call.
Detective Carter.
The lead detective on the case.
He wanted to meet with us.
To go over the evidence.
And to tell us what was happening with Diane.
Ryan and I looked at each other.
We both knew this was it.
The beginning of the fight.
Sarah came over to stay with Lily and Noah.
She brought breakfast.
Pancakes and fruit.
Lily's favorite.
"Go," she said. "We'll be fine here. I've got them."
We hugged the kids goodbye.
Noah reached for me as I walked out the door.
My heart ached.
But I knew this was important.
The police station was cold and sterile.
Detective Carter met us in a small interview room.
He was in his forties.
Tired eyes.
A kind face.
"Thank you for coming in," he said.
He laid a file on the table.
"I want to start by saying this. The video evidence is very strong. Very strong. Combined with Lily's statement and the doctor's report... we have a solid case."
I breathed a sigh of relief.
Ryan squeezed my hand.
"We went to Diane's house last night," Detective Carter continued. "She was... uncooperative. She denied everything. Said the video was edited. That you two were framing her."
"Of course she did," Ryan muttered.
"She also said she wants to press charges against you, Emily. For assault."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
"She claims you attacked her unprovoked. That the baby's fall was an accident caused by your aggression."
"That's a lie!" I said, my voice rising.
"I know it is," Detective Carter said gently. "And the evidence proves it's a lie. But we have to follow procedure. Her claim will be investigated. But given the video evidence, it's unlikely to go anywhere."
He opened the file.
"Diane has been charged with child endangerment and assault on a minor. She was arrested and released on bail this morning."
"Released?" Ryan said. "She's out?"
"She posted bond," Detective Carter said. "But we've already filed for an emergency protective order. She's not allowed within 500 feet of your home, your work, or any of you. That includes Lily."
I felt a wave of relief.
But also fear.
500 feet wasn't that far.
"What happens next?" I asked.
"The case will go to the district attorney's office. They'll review the evidence and decide whether to pursue formal charges. Given what we have, I'm confident they will."
He looked at us.
"I need to warn you. Diane is going to fight this. Hard. People like her don't go down easily. She'll try to make your lives miserable. She'll try to turn family and friends against you. She'll try to paint you as the villains."
Ryan nodded.
"We're ready."
"Are you?" Detective Carter asked. "Because this could take months. Maybe longer. It's going to be emotionally draining. Especially with a baby and a child involved."
"We're doing this for our son," I said. "And for Lily. No one should have to live in fear of someone who's supposed to love them."
Detective Carter nodded.
"Good. That's the right attitude. Now, there's something else I need to tell you."
He paused.
"When we searched Diane's phone... we found some interesting things. Text messages. To various family members. And to her lawyer."
He slid a piece of paper across the table.
It was a transcript of text messages.
I read them.
My blood ran cold.
"Emily is controlling Ryan. She's turning him against me. I need to get custody of Noah. He'd be better off with me."
Another one.
"Lily is a spoiled brat. Sarah is too weak to raise her properly. Maybe I should file for custody of her too."
And another.
"If I can't have my family, no one can."
I looked up at Detective Carter.
"She was planning to take our kids?"
"It seems like she was at least thinking about it," he said. "These messages were sent over the past few weeks. It looks like she was building a case against you. Trying to get other family members on her side."
Ryan was shaking.
"She was going to try to take my son?"
"We're looking into whether there's more," Detective Carter said. "But for now, this helps our case. It shows premeditation. A pattern of behavior."
He stood up.
"I'll be in touch. If Diane tries to contact you, or if you see her anywhere near your home, call me immediately. Day or night."
We left the police station in silence.
Ryan was quiet the whole drive home.
I could see the anger in his eyes.
The guilt.
The pain.
When we got home, Sarah was in the kitchen with Lily.
Noah was in his high chair, eating mashed bananas.
"How did it go?" Sarah asked.
Ryan told her everything.
The charges.
The protective order.
The text messages.
Sarah's face went pale as she read them.
"She was going to try to take Lily?"
"It looks like it," Ryan said.
Sarah pulled Lily close.
"Over my dead body," she whispered.
Lily looked confused.
"Take me where?"
Sarah knelt down.
"Nowhere, baby. No one is taking you anywhere. You're safe here."
That afternoon, Ryan and I met with a lawyer.
A family law attorney who specialized in domestic violence cases.
She was tough.
Smart.
Compassionate.
"We're going to file for a permanent restraining order," she said. "And we're going to make sure Diane never gets within a mile of any of you. The text messages the detective found are gold. They show intent. They show that she's not just a grandmother who made a mistake. She's a dangerous woman who was planning to destroy your family."
She looked at us.
"We also need to think about Lily. She's been exposed to this woman's toxicity for years. She might benefit from talking to someone. A child therapist."
I nodded.
"We were thinking the same thing."
"And you two," she said. "This is traumatic. Don't forget to take care of yourselves. You can't be strong for the kids if you're falling apart."
She was right.
I hadn't thought about myself.
Or Ryan.
We'd been so focused on the kids.
On the case.
On justice.
But we were hurting too.
When we got home that evening, we found Lily sitting on the couch.
She was holding a drawing.
It was a picture of our family.
Me.
Ryan.
Noah.
And her.
All holding hands.
Smiling.
"I drew this for you," she said.
I sat down beside her.
"It's beautiful, sweetheart."
"Can I be in your family forever?" she asked quietly.
My heart broke.
"Oh, Lily. You already are. You're our family. Always."
She smiled.
A real smile.
The first one I'd seen since that terrible afternoon.
Ryan sat down on her other side.
"We love you, Lily. More than you know."
That night, as I held Noah in my arms.
And watched Lily sleeping peacefully in the guest room.
And felt Ryan beside me.
I knew.
We were already winning.
Because we had each other.
May you like
And Diane couldn't take that away.
No matter what she tried.
