Chapter 14

Life settled into a beautiful rhythm.

The kids were growing.

Lily was twelve now.

In seventh grade.

She was becoming a young woman.

Smart.

Confident.

Kind.

She still loved art.

And she was getting really good at it.

She won first place in the school art show.

Her painting was called "Family is Love."

It was a picture of all of us.

Holding hands.

Smiling.

With a big heart in the background.

We were so proud.

Noah was three years old.

Full of energy.

Full of questions.

Full of love.

He was talking in full sentences now.

And he never stopped talking.

"Why is the sky blue?"

"Why do dogs bark?"

"Why do I have to go to bed?"

He was curious about everything.

And he was sweet.

He would give us hugs and kisses for no reason.

He would tell us he loved us every day.

Ryan and I were happy.

We had our little business.

A small café downtown.

We opened it together.

It was our dream.

We called it "Family Grounds."

It was a cozy place.

With comfortable chairs.

Good coffee.

And lots of love.

Lily worked there on weekends.

She was the best barista.

Noah liked to come in and "help."

Which usually meant eating cookies and charming the customers.

The café became a community gathering place.

People would come in not just for coffee, but to talk.

To laugh.

To share their stories.

We had regulars.

People who became like family.

One day, a woman came into the café.

She looked familiar.

But I couldn't place her.

She ordered a coffee.

And then she sat down at a table.

She watched me.

Finally, she got up and walked over.

"Emily?"

"Yes?"

"I'm Jennifer. Diane's sister."

My heart stopped.

Diane's sister.

The one Diane had pushed down the stairs when they were kids.

"I'm sorry," she said. "I know this is unexpected. I just... I wanted to meet you. To meet your family. I saw the café online. And I wanted to come."

I was cautious.

But I could see the kindness in her eyes.

"Would you like to sit down?"

She nodded.

We sat at a table.

"I've been following your story," she said. "What Diane did... it was terrible. But I can't say I'm surprised. She was always like that. Even when we were kids. She was cruel. And manipulative. And she always got away with it."

She paused.

"I wanted to apologize. On her behalf. I know it's not my place. But I feel like someone from our family should say it. I'm so sorry for what she did to your son. To your family. To Lily."

"Thank you," I said. "That means a lot."

"I also wanted to say how proud I am of you. Of all of you. You took something terrible. And you turned it into something beautiful. You built this wonderful family. This wonderful business. You're happy. And that's the best revenge you could ever have."

Ryan came over.

He recognized her name.

"Jennifer?"

"Hi, Ryan. It's been a long time."

Ryan sat down.

"How are you?"

"I'm good," she said. "I got away from Diane years ago. I moved across the country. I built my own life. My own family. I haven't spoken to her in years. And I don't plan to."

She looked at us.

"I just wanted you to know that not everyone in our family is like her. Some of us are good. Some of us believe in love and kindness. And some of us are on your side."

Lily came over then.

She was carrying a tray of cookies.

"Mom, Dad, I brought -"

She stopped when she saw Jennifer.

"Hi," Lily said.

"Hi," Jennifer said. "You must be Lily. I've heard so much about you. You're very brave."

Lily smiled.

"Thank you."

Jennifer stood up.

"I should go. I don't want to intrude. But I wanted to meet you. To tell you that I'm happy for you. That you deserve all the happiness in the world."

She handed me a piece of paper.

"My phone number. If you ever need anything. Or if you just want to talk. I'm here. We're family. Even if Diane isn't part of it."

She left.

I looked at the piece of paper.

Then I looked at Ryan.

Then at Lily.

"Family," I said.

"Family," Ryan agreed.

We didn't call Jennifer right away.

But we did eventually.

And she became part of our lives.

Not a big part.

But a part.

She came to Lily's birthday parties.

She came to Noah's soccer games.

She came to the café for coffee sometimes.

She was good people.

And she proved that family isn't just about blood.

It's about who chooses to love you.

Who chooses to support you.

Who chooses to be there for you.

And we had plenty of those people.

Sarah.

Ryan's dad.

Karen.

Detective Carter.

Our lawyer.

Dr. Maya.

Dr. Chen.

Jennifer.

And all our friends and regulars at the café.

We were surrounded by love.

By support.

May you like

By family.

And we were grateful.
