Chapter 15

Five years had passed since that terrible Sunday afternoon.

Five years of healing.

Of growth.

Of love.

Lily was sixteen now.

A beautiful young woman.

Smart.

Confident.

Kind.

She was driving now.

She had a boyfriend.

A nice boy named Ethan.

She was planning for college.

She wanted to be a child psychologist.

To help kids who had been through what she had been through.

To be the person who helped them heal.

Noah was seven years old.

In second grade.

He was smart.

Funny.

Full of energy.

He loved soccer.

And dinosaurs.

And his big sister.

He was happy.

Healthy.

Loved.

You would never know what he had been through.

Ryan and I were happier than ever.

Our café was thriving.

We had just opened a second location.

Our marriage was strong.

Full of love and laughter and respect.

We had built the life we had always dreamed of.

A life full of love.

Of safety.

Of happiness.

Diane was still in prison.

She had three more years left on her sentence.

We hadn't heard from her since that letter.

And we didn't want to.

She was part of our past.

Not our future.

One evening, we were all sitting in the backyard.

The sun was setting.

The sky was pink and orange.

Lily was sitting on the porch swing.

Noah was lying on the grass, looking at the stars.

Ryan and I were sitting on the patio furniture, holding hands.

"Mom?" Lily said.

"Yes, baby?"

"Do you ever think about what would have happened if... if Grandma had gotten away with it?"

I thought about it.

"Sometimes. But I try not to. Because she didn't get away with it. Because you were brave. Because you told the truth. Because we had each other. And because justice was served."

Lily nodded.

"I'm glad I told the truth. Even though I was scared."

"You were so brave," Ryan said. "You saved us, Lily. You saved Noah. You saved our family."

Noah sat up.

"Saved me from what, Dad?"

We looked at each other.

Noah was seven now.

Old enough to understand.

But we had always been careful about what we told him.

We didn't want him to be scared.

We didn't want him to hate.

Ryan knelt down beside him.

"Buddy, when you were a baby, something bad happened. Grandma made a bad choice. She hurt you. And it was wrong. But your sister was brave. And she told the truth. And she made sure you were safe. And you've been safe ever since."

Noah thought about it.

"Grandma hurt me?"

"Yes, buddy. But she can't hurt you anymore. She's far away. And you're safe. You're surrounded by people who love you. Who will protect you. Always."

Noah looked at Lily.

"Sissy saved me?"

Lily smiled.

"I did, buddy. And I'll always save you. Always."

Noah ran over and hugged her.

"I love you, Sissy."

"I love you too, Noah."

I looked at my family.

And my heart was full.

Full of love.

Full of gratitude.

Full of peace.

We had been through hell.

We had faced things that would have destroyed most people.

But we had survived.

We had healed.

We had grown.

And we had built something beautiful.

A family built on love.

On trust.

On courage.

On survival.

Ryan squeezed my hand.

"Are you happy?" he asked.

I looked at Lily and Noah laughing together.

I looked at the beautiful sunset.

I looked at the life we had built.

And I smiled.

"I'm the happiest I've ever been."

"Me too," Ryan said. "Me too."

We sat there for a long time.

Watching the stars come out.

Listening to the kids laugh.

Feeling the warm summer breeze.

And I knew.

Everything was going to be okay.

Noah was safe.

Lily was confident.

Ryan and I were in love.

We were all happy.

We were all loved.

We were all exactly where we were meant to be.

Justice had been served.

Healing had happened.

May you like

And our family was whole.

The end.
